Should I buy my GS back?

Obviously, I want to. My only concern is the extent of the repair. A month or two after selling it, the guy ran it out of oil and 'it stopped working'. I have no idea what I might be getting into, any thoughts? We talking a basic rebuild or a new engine here? He said he'd take 300, I'm gonna try to talk him down to 200.

Replace a motor, its easier than rebuilding. Not to mention cheaper too.
Run out of oil = DOA, bottom end rebuild - bearings are next to impossible to find in odd sizes. You're therefore screwed. Besides cast aluminum has a memory and misbehaves when you rebuild it.

Every story I've heard of people running their engines without oil resulted in blown engines.  If you want to buy it back, I would plan on having to buy and install a new engine.

Also, anybody tried a gsxr engine before? I've seen it brought up, but don't recall anything specific.

I have my 02 Gs500 sitting next to my 95 Katana 750 and it is easy to see that you will have a lot of work ahead of you when switching to a 4 cyl.If you have the time, creativity and some decent metal fab/welding skills, it is possible though. Just by looking at them side-by-side, I think the upper section of the frame can be used as is. The lower square tubing supporting the GS500 engine is gonna have to be removed and replaced with beefier, wider bracing or subframe when fitting the bigger engine. Wiring should be easy since you can just reuse the engine harness from the donor bike as is.

Summary
-Cut off the puny little stock lower subframe supporting the GS engine.
-Do a mockup fit of the donor engine with engine wiring/harness such that it lines up with the rear sprocket
-Weld new support braces/subframe to support new engine using the bigger engines original mount points.
-Have a one of a kind GS

Yeah, I figured that would be the worst case scenario. I would just as soon replace with a stock engine as do all that. I already have an I-4 for when I wanna go fast.

i not saying you cant put a gixxer motor in the gs frame because anything can be done with enough time and money but why would you want to.  the gs frame is not made to hold the weight of a gixxer motor let alone the power of one.  if you want to buy the bike back and dont want to put a 500 or a gr650 motor in it dont buy it back. just my 02 cents tho its your money

I think trying to fit a gsxr motor in that frame would be a nightmare. Are you talking about an older or newer motor? Newer motors only mount from the top and have frames wide enough to wrap around the engine to mount from the sides, so they're pretty much out. You could possibly fit an 80s-early 90s gsxr motor in there, but I doubt without some serious modifications. I doubt you'd have room for the carbs to fit, and I think it would be too wide for the bottom/back end where the frame goes. Not sure how the chain would line up with the frame, you might have a clearance problem.

Anyway, here's 2, the seem to average around $500 but you can definitely find them cheaper if you look around. I've seen plenty of full GSs go for less than $500, so you could always buy a parts bike and make back some money selling the rest of the stuff on it....

Yeah, I was thinking early 90's 600. If I come across a good deal on an engine, I'll buy it back. It's not like he's advertising it, I can go get it whenever I want.
