Another way to test your ignition system

If the thing won't start or runs badly here's a quick way to test, without dragging down your battery by cranking the starter.

You need a soldering gun like a 100 watt .

Remove the sparkplugs, leave attached to their leads and grounded. Gearshift in neutral.

Remove the sidecover over the signal coils/rotor - turn the bike's ignition key to run position (don't crank), place the solder gun tip near a pickup coil and pull the trigger - the ac current at the tip will excite the signal coil to operate the ignition as though the rotor is turning ...

You should see (and hear) sparking at a 60 hz rate at one spark plug, if the ignition system is all good.

Obviously there's no need to let the solder gun heat up and don't actually touch any part of the bike to be safe.

If you get nothing at the sparkplugs then maybe your battery is too low to operate the ignition module, or a faulty safety switch, or wiring fault, or faulty module.

And you might want to try this when your bike is running well to get a good idea of exactly where to position the solder tip.
