Started winterizing the bike and notice this.  :o  Looks like I'm due for a new rear sprocket and chain and maybe a front sprocket. Will check the front later this week.

That looks weird. The teeth are work off so evenly. A chipped tooth or two maybe, but all of them? Could you have a bolt or something fastened to your swing arm that wore off all the tips of the teeth? Could there be something stuck in a link of your chain that caused the wear?

That chain and sprocket look devoid of any kind of lube  :dunno_black:

If you don't look after your chain, that's what happens. :nono:

If the back looks like that, then if the front has the same mileage it'll be worse!

After looking at that photo again, I would guess that the sprocket got so worn and the chain so loose that the chain jumped the sprocket teeth and knocked the tops off them all.

I should have noticed the lack of lube. :icon_rolleyes:

tsk tsk tsk...  :nono:

haha, I can't even see the picture while I'm at work but I'll just take my best guess of what it looks like

Nothing tells your chain and sprockets, "I love you" like DuPont Teflon!

I feel horrible now for having ridden her all summer without checking.  :embarassed:

BUT I did lube her a little with some of my chainsaw bar oil in early spring.  :dunno_black:

Is this recommended or are you compulsive?  :D

ragecage23

I'm pretty sure he's compulsive haha I only lube mine when I do the oil. Or if it's raining I'll do it every two "rain" days.

First chain, I used Belray O-ring chain lube.  Nasty, dirty, slimy, stinky stuff.  Lasted about 8000 miles.  Next chain I'm using the Teflon chain lube. 8000 miles on it and it looks like I'll get at least 4000 more.

I lube every 500-600 miles or more frequently if it rains.

I view what's recommended as a Minimum Guide only.

First chain I used WD40 exclusively. Got 23k out of that chain. Wasn't too bad, had a tight spot in it and could easily have gotten a few more thou out of it, but changed it anyway.

This chain I am using Lanotec Lanolin Lube

So far this stuff is the bomb. Chain sounds smooth as I turn the wheel and spray it on. 12k on this chain so far and all is good  :thumb:

One bolt started to go rusty. Sprayed this on and it appears to have stopped the rust as the air to it is now sealed.

If it rains, like ragecage, I lube every 2nd day.

Sometimes I'll go two tank fulls between lubes - such as on weekend rides that see 1.5 tank fulls get used, I'll lube after the next fill up. But usually every tank full gets a quick lube.

Call me obsessive if you like, but I'd rather have a well lubed chain and sprocket than think one spray every 600 miles will do me.

With the amount of riding I do this means I am easily lubing it weekly.

I know this is strange, but I also check the oil and forks weekly. And check the tire pressure when I am filling up as well - or if it was filled in the afternoon after riding on the hot bitumen, will wait until early next morning before riding the one mile to my nearest gas station to readjust the tire pressure.

seamax you fail because you spent more time spray painting your chain & sprocket red and black than you did spraying lube on it  :nono:

But if your GS is the GS I think it is....you get a save, because it is one of the Coolest GS's on the face of the earth!
(thankyou for all of the red and black paint)

The one I use comes from an Australian Company http://www.lanotec.com.au/

I'd imagine any sufficiently large hardware store or auto store should have some kind of lanolin lube - they do down here. Maybe a truck parts store too.  :dunno_black:
