so i got a bottom end from a gs500 2004 complete with a thrown rod(hard to believe right?) and i finally started putting the 450 back together the only thing that was different in the clutch is the oil pump drive had higher ratio so i had to swap the 500 pump gear no biggy. cover went on as did the pushrod. but i am missing something in the ignition side. the piece that goes on the crank between the triggers, and it has two pickups. the 500 has only one. so i was wondering if someone had this part, what year did they start with electronic ignition, and when did they go to one pickup? also would it be possible to convert to the newer style or are there major differences? thanks.

If I remember correctly........the 450s of that era used a far more basic ignition system that employed a rotor that would advance/retard the system centrifugally.

As far as I am concerned the two systems are totaly different and not interchangable. Perhaps its best you stick with the complete stock 500 system and try to make that work with the 450.

As I suspected.

You are going to have to use the 500 ignition system including the module, should be do-able :thumb: You might have a problem if the 450 cams are timed differently from the 500 though

dgyver

89-02 have 2 pickups
04+ have 1 pickup

There were no 03 made for the US market but they were made for other markets and should be the same as 89-02.
Common sense in not very common.
