This is my first post, tho i am on here all the time. I'm wondering if anybody know if there were changes between the 2000 and 2001 model years that would cause them to require different crash bars?? Yes, I am a newb, yes i've tried the search engine, etc. I would really appreciate someone helping me out. the crash bars i'm looking at are the suzuki bars not the renntech ones.

*ftr: I just bought a 2001 gs500 w/3400 miles in excellent condition for $1300. I had never even sat on a running motorcycle before this, so i'm still learning about everthing motorcycle related, lifestyle, etc, so bear with me if my etiquette is poor, i'm tryin.

thanks guys, hope to hear back!

The engine mounts for all GS500's is the same. People swap engines all the time.
That also means the crash bars would be the same as they mount to the engine mounts (often replacing the engine mount bolt with a longer one and would be included with the crash bar kit).
You can't have crash bars AND a belly pan (aka chin fairing or bug spoiler) because they get in the way of each other. You have to cut into the belly pan so it fits around the crash bars.
Crash bars won't go on the F models because the full fairing is in the way.
Crash slider bobbins are available also for the E models and the F models (but requires a hole in the fairing for it). R&G Racing makes the nicest ones for the GS500's.
You can get SW Motec, Rentec, Suzuki factory OEM's (if you're lucky, discontinued part), Hepco&Becker and one other company. Price and design varies but all are available except the Suzuki OEM's because they are discontinued but they do show up once in a while.
I've got each one in my garage. Only have crash sliders on right now as I put on the OEM belly pan. I plan to cut into another OEM belly pan I have to fit one of the the crash bar sets.

PS: Some of the breaks or groupings of models by year as to deal with certain changes. Like 89-96 are grouped together, then in 97 they did come minor changes like the clutch switch and others. 2001-2002 they changed the tail cowling and other cosmetic things. Other things were done in different years.
never hurts to ask, though. Things like the clutch lever changed in 1997 when the clutch switch changed so pre-97 clutch levers damage the switch on later years, while later years will work just fine on any GS500. Older adjustable brake levers work fine on all models, even though not always listed as compatible for the newer bikes.
When in doubt, just ask. We're all here to help.

Oh, and show us pictures of your bike, please?

The Buddha

It will work on 01 wont on the 04+ - fairing gets in the way.
Cool.
