Now, a welder, that would be a nice addition...grinder, hammers and dollies...yup, that would be nice in the shop...need to build a shop...back to wood again...

I bought a cheap welder almost a year ago, tried it once and didn't get anywhere, and it's still sitting down there haha. I'll figure it out someday. I might have better luck if I replace the HF wire for some better quality wire. It's hard to tell what you're doing wrong when you don't completely trust the machinery you're working on.

I have a couple of friends who are welders, so getting advice wouldn't be a problem...from what I can tell, it's more of a practice thing than anything else.  I think I would use it more for building parts for my truck than my bike, but the skills couldn't hurt either way...and tools are always a good thing... :thumb:

Welders  are definitely worth having... but I am a firm believer in owning enough ( and it never is ) tools.

If you're just using a  MIG welder without the Gas ( Flux core welding wire )- Your welds will look kind of nasty and will need grinding (but hopefully have enough penetration)... If there's a Bottle kit for it..( Gun /regulator )- It's well worth it.... your welds -with some practice experience will come out  sooo  much better...

I bought a Lincoln 100 and  the Kit forever ago... to fix a floor and cab mounts in an old Pickup truck... Watched the video  that came with the welder-it  explained feed speed and voltage and showed some technique....
I practiced on some scrap and went at it... turned out good...that floor is still in the truck...

A Good welder  is worth owning...

If I get enough "spare" funds together I'm going to get my self a TIG setup and take some real classes ( I've Mig'd for awhile and welded up the majority of all the awning frames at the company I worked for both steel and Aluminum MIG....Nice Miller machine..but I digress..)

You can never have too many tools...

But there are some people that just shouldn't go anywhere near them....(like the subject in this thread..)..heheh..

Mine is just a flux wire welder. I just bought it to learn on before I spent real money on something. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on what kind of welder is good to start on, and I didn't want to spend that much when I couldn't get a consistent answer out of people. All I've done so far is take 2 pieces of scrap steel and try to weld them together but I was barely even getting anything to stick to them, so I'm not even close yet. I haven't had anything that has needed to be welded yet, so I think the motivation has just been low.

Grind the areas clean and make sure you have a good ground connection....  The right wire speed and voltage is important too.... (as well as your hand speed..).All depends on what/ how thick the stuff is you're welding...

Gas MIG is a good place to start... I'd recommend a Lincoln (Not the only good brand out there tho)-it's never failed me...... My 100 will handle up to 3/16ths thick ( and you can go a little thicker if you preheat with a torch but that's only what I'd do with no other options..)...
Had a Nice Miller at the awning place.

You can weld ok with flux core- MIG (gas) is just much cleaner and more consistent ( ie better welds....).

MMMMMMM tools.... Now I feel compelled to go buy a new tool today......

don't get me wrong I love tools too. Probably have much more than most women. I would love to learn how to weld but my AICD book says I'm not allowed to weld
