We could start a thread in the Tard Farm and have a gross out contest

( PS: Noticed Tard farm is locked out - can't start new threads there. Gross out body parts would be a cool one! )

Last March I was working out doing some exercises of holding a bench and jumping over it from one side to the other.
Technically, your legs go up, over and down. When they went up at a 45* angle, well, they didn't go up and over but hit the underside (steel) part of the bench. Ergo the achilles tendon got snapped. Sort of a freak accident. had to hit just the right part of the bench in just the right (ok wrong) way for it to happen.

We weren't sure of the extent of injury and I did see a doctor. After a month or two of not getting better I saw a standard orthopedic doctor. Stock answer: 6 weeks in a cast. "That's how we do it." When I asked about exercising and cleanliness in a cast, he said "Your body. Do what you want". BAD BAD doctor.

Didn't want to farkle up the summer and since it wasn't done right away, it really didn't matter when I had it fixed. So I planned to do it in January when riding season here sucks and I finished all my travel to insure Gold Elite status for another year (free baggage, upgrades and special shorter lines).

With the injury, I was able to walk around and ride - even a bicycle - because the other muscles in my leg were in such good condition that they took over. Since I wasn't crippled, just a slight limp, no need to rush surgery with a bad doctor during riding season.

I was told to see the sports doctors at University of Washington. What a change! Dr. Green said "Well, after we do the surgery, I have some bad news. You won't be able to go to the gym for at least ONE WEEK." Yes! I can live with a week's break but not over 6 weeks on my butt like the other "cutters" said. So 10 days in a splint and now in a plastic boot for a few weeks. NOT 6 weeks in a cast on my butt. I'm now back at the gym and gimping around without crutches. I have to be careful, but can still work up a good sweat with upper body work.

Maybe I can't ride for another month because of the plastic boot, but I am active and nearly back to a normal life - 2 weeks after a major surgery (had to put in a tendon graft). Had I seen Dr. Green first, I would have had the surgery done right away. Recovery would have been a couple weeks shorter.

Dr. Green even took the time to answer a full page of questions I had written up before seeing him. Now THAT'S a GOOD doctor! Some answers weren't what I wanted, but he clearly explained why. After that, I was confident and really anxious for him to get the surgery done.

It pays to find the right doctor!

Here's the bio on Dr. Green. He treats the UW Husky's athletes and is a professor. Much better than your standard ortho surgeon.

Oh, Thanks for asking!

Ugh, well it put me in the hospital! Been in since Friday and had to have emergency surgery. Will have to be on IV antibiotics for a few weeks  :embarrassed:  The incision is going to have to heal from the inside out. I haven't even seen this wonderful thing!

This thread makes me wish I had pictures from the craniotomy I underwent back when I was 16.
