Interesting. I assume it is still a cable drive? My first try would be lubing the cable, perhaps it is sticking but breaks loose when you give it a rev.

Try dropping down to 4 Oreos and set your pilot screw 3 turns out.

If its anything like me, it'll need a cup of coffee before work!

But seriously, first check that the cable is firmly seated at both ends and firmly screwed in, next try undoing the cable from the back of the tach and see whether it rotates. That'll tell you whether the problem is in the tach or the cable/drive gear.

I thought you said your taco wasn't working, which would've been a serious issue.

It sounds like to me, that there's some grease inside your tachometer that's kinda gunked up. The tack cable spinning slowly doesn't have the strength to break it free, but once it start spinning faster it pulls it loose, and after it spins a while the grease has been worked loose enough to keep working. Once you stop riding for a few hours it probably stiffens up. I'd get some kind of good degreaser and spray it into the back of the tachometer, maybe even connect the cable and let it spin for a while to work the degreaser around. Let it drain out, and then spray in a lighter lube that won't gunk up.

Keep in mine that's just me saying what I would do. That doesn't mean it's the right answer, or that there isn't a chance it could break something.
