Choke slide sticking.

Hi, I replaced the carb on my '93 with one from an 2002 and finally got it started yesterday.  One problem is that the choke slide on the carb sticks.  If I pull it to full choke, it doesn't retract when I turn the choke off.  Anyone know why?

Also does anyone know what the hose that comes out from the top o the carb goes to?  It extends from a rubber T fitting on the top.

Make sure the retracting spring is seated correctly. I'll try to find a pic

The top T is just a breather ,held by a clamp to one of the air filter bolts

Check to see if both choke plungers are seated squarely into the carb body also

First, disconnect the choke cable from the carb and slide the choke mechanism on the carb assembly using your finger. If it moves freely and springs back properly, you can be 100% sure that problem is the choke cable... which is probably what it is.

The spring is fine.  I'm confused on what the hcoke plunders are though.  I will check to see if the slide needs to be lubed or something.  Hope it's not the cable.

why not the cable its cheap

take the slide off the carb and check each plunger individually
take the caps off and spray some cleaner in the holes

Where are these plungers at? My carb works, but my choke doesn't. The bike just acts weird when I try to use it so I turn up the idle to start the bike, then turn it down as it warms up. I was gonna soak my carbs in pine sol(someone here did it and was pleased with the results, I don't remember who) to see if I can resolve the choke issue, but maybe something is going on with my plungers??

Interesting. I assume there's no way to clean those without taking them out of the bike? So regardless of the million times now that I've gone at my carbs with carb cleaner and WD40, I probably haven't ever gotten to the plungers.

When I try to use my choke, if I put it on slightly, the RPMs will jump up a bit, but then if I try to use the choke any more the bike just starts to bogg down and wants to die. I seem to remember at one point that the more choke you used, the higher the rpms would get, and now it just goes from nothing, to too much choke, to the bike just wanting to die. Does that sound like a plunger issue??  :dunno_black:

Your bike might be a bit rich on mixture so it dies when you pull the choke adding more fuel .

What jets do you use and is it hard to start without the choke ?

I think the main is a 135, but I can't remember for sure. The choke used to work perfectly fine. It was only after the bike sat(without stabilizer) for a few years. It starts perfectly fine when I turn up the idle, it would just be nice for the choke to do what it's supposed to. I'm probably going to sell it this spring, and I don't feel like trying to explain to people that the bike runs great, but you've gotta turn up the idle every time you start it because I'd never buy a bike from someone who tried to tell me that story haha

Honestly I don't need the choke if I could get it started with just the idle.  It's just weird.  Is the plunger the black plastic piece or the brass piece?  I will lube it for sure to make sure.

It looks like the plunger is the brass part. The black part is way too dirty for me to assume it's actually inside the carb.

I don't know why your bike wouldn't start with the idle if mine does. Just give it about 6 good twists, turn it down slowly as the engine warms, then whenever you stop at a stop sign or redlight see where the idle is and keep turning it down until you get back to normal. If it stays too high you'll keep getting the idle to hang when you let off the gas. Eventually when you turn it down enough it'll stop.

Quick question, how do I actually get the plungers out? I was looking at my carbs, I see where they are, and I see that those little black pieces are holding that bigger metal slider onto the carb bodies, but how do I go about pulling those plastic sleeves out without destroying them? They seem like the kind of part that I would gently poke at with some needle nose pliers and a thin screwdriver for a while, and then eventually they would break.
