Just looking for a consensus for oil weight and level for sonic springs.
I hear some people run stock weight and some go a little heavier.
Doing this myself and have instructions but just wondering if anyone has anything to offer in terms of oil level???
Cheers a million again guys

I have Racetech springs, but spring brand doesn't matter one bit when it comes to oil weight.

15 weight is a very good place to start. 20 weight should also work, but unless you run emulators, you may suffer a harsh ride over bumps if you go that thick.

Oil level depends on the volume of space the springs take up. With the stock springs, the spec oil level is 99mm. With my racetech springs, 100mm is absolutely the highest you can go. Anymore, and you're pretty much guaranteed to hydro-lock the forks and blow our your seals. If your sonic springs are significantly longer than the stockers, I'd advise you to start at 120mm, and work your way down from there. If your sonic springs are about the same length as stock, start with the 100mm oil level.

Measure your forks fully extended and fully compressed to figure out their travel. Wrap a zip-tie around the fork leg and go for a good ride. Measure how far the zip-tie is pushed up the leg... If you bottom out the forks based on that measurement, raise the oil level up another 5-10mm.

I put 0.85 sonic springs in my 2002 about 2 weeks ago, awesome improvement.

As i'm quite a novice when it comes to motorbikes, I got dad to give me a hand (mechanic for many years and a rider for longer lol), went with 15 weight oil and stuck with the stock oil level of 99mm.

Been on some pretty bumpy roads since then, no issues at all, bike feels heaps more composed  :thumb:

I went with 15wt at 115mm and it's been awesome, but I haven't had the time to play around with different weights/heights yet. All I can say that I'm extremely satisfied, especially relative to stock.

12mm from the top and it's awsome  :woohoo:

I take it you're measuring with the springs installed?

oh yeah and i should add that the springs were not in the fork when putting the oil in  :)

15w set at 115mm. Very important to measure the air gap according to the instructions, i.e. with the spring removed and the fork fully collapsed.

thanks so much guys.
Man i love his forum!
Filming went overtime this week so will be shooting all weekend. Springs will have to wait till next sat.
Million thanks as always.
Cant wait to see what a non diving front end on a gs feels like. Rode my girlfriends SV650 with upgraded springs and emulators. man!!! what a difference.
