70 MPH,its turning 7k, then 100 rpm increments every 10 MPH. Is this normal. Stock size rear tire,no sprocket changes that I know of. It just seems like it needs another gear, or maybe a sprocket change.

mister

At 70mph (112kph) you should only be revving somewhere around 5,500 rpm in 6th gear.
75mph (120kph) is around 6,000 rpm

Either your sprockets are not stock, your speedo is way Way WAY off or you are not riding in 6th.

I presume you mean 1000rpm increases every 10mph, otherwise something very unusual is going on.

Well, if you don't know, count the teeth. Standard is 16 and 39.

I'm with mister, 70mph should be around five-and-a-half thou. This is not an exact science but given flatish, reasonable conditions over a period it's about right.
Take the advice, count the cogs etc first, check tyre sizes and see where we go from there.

What is the warm idle speed? - should be 1100 - 1300 (ish)

From first 89 GS500E road test, nothing has changed since.

So 70/60x4730= 5518 rpm @ 70 mph with stock gearing and tire sizes.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

Sometimes when entering a freeway I'll forget which gear I'm in. At 70 mph on my stock geared bike if the tach needle is ahead of the speedometer needle then I'm in fifth. If the tach needle is behind the speedometer needle then I'm in sixth. It's an easy way to check and takes a fraction of a second.

I'm going to count the teeth. Yeah I counted gears....shifting all the way out to sixth.
