Anyone know why the Generator (Rotor/Flywheel) on my 2004 gs500 has an orange plastic coating on the magnets? What is the purpose of this coating? most bikes dont have it...
I ask because I noticed that some of this coating has melted/burned off some of the magnets????

gs500e

Coating to keep the windings of the coils seperated; aka to keep the coil windings from shorting to one another.

Glyptal.

On large motors (150hp+) (and alternators/generators) it is well worth being redipped; even periodically as a maintenance item.
On a motorcycle.... i have no idea.

Is it not working correctly?
I keep forgetting to turn the petcock on before i bolt down gas tank. :(

Kind of unsure of why the Motorcycle is not starting.... I opened the crankcase covers and noticed this issue. Wondered if it was the culprit.

gs500e

Does it appear it came from the stator (flung off by centrifugal force) or look like it should be part of the magnets?  (glue holding magnets on?)

(i've never had a motorcycle engine apart; so i don't know) (i just know a little speck about industrial motors/generators)
I keep forgetting to turn the petcock on before i bolt down gas tank. :(

They are permanant magnets, there are no coils/winding on the flywheel, only on the stator.

Its bonding agent, some might call it glue. It keeps the magnets in place on the inside of the flywheel. On the sides its not actually doing anything and serves no purpose, unless Suzuki decided they wanted to stick the magnet sides to fresh air!

You will probably find the missing bits in the sump.  I picked all the loose stuff off on mine, didnt want it coming off and clogging up an oilway.

Okay Thanks for the help! I will try troubleshooting some other areas before coming back to this. And, no I am not certain this was the source of any problem, I was just trying to do a throrough check on the bike for the season.
