Hey guys,

I haven't been the best to my GS for a couple of years. Basically since I got my VFR 800 in 09!   :D

I'm trying to rebuild the carbs to get the bike running again, but the inside is with what looks like green copper oxide except it's a little fuzzy.  There is some of that on the tank petcock too.  Anyway, I'm trying to find a rebuild kit for my 02.  A search of the past threads identified Carb Kit Capital as the best source, but they only have kits for 1989-1993. Ebay and other online kits seem to skip 02 as well.  Any help on which kit to order is greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

I got my carb kit (gaskets and float needle) from www.partsnmore.com although it looks like they only offer a kit for the '89-'00 bikes. Those carbs have two jets. Starting in '01 the carbs had three jets. I think I've got those dates right. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. I don't know if there's any change in the float bowl gasket shape, needle, seat, etc. Can you use the parts from the earlier kit in the later carbs?  We need to ask one of our resident carburetor expert-type folks.

Green fuzz you say ... muhahahaha ... buddha laughs @ green fuzz. Maybe buddha eats green fuzz ... mmmmmm Green fuzz ....

Anyway dont need to rebuild it unless you see its leaking.
Clean very carefully, open it up gently and see if its made it. If it did, you're good.
Buddha can do that for you with a extra green fuzz charge of $10. 45 for rejet parts and labor, 10 for green fuzz, refunded if green fuzz isn't tasty. That's rejet and clean. Why you ask you need to rejet.
OK the green fuzz you see is a copper sulphate mixed wiht dirt, oil and gas. Where did I get copper sulphate from you ask ... K its like this. Jets have copper in them, they are over 50% copper, cos they are brass. Brass is - copper, aluminum and tin right. Anyway I'll save you the metallurgy lesson here - knock yourself out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass, anyway the sulphur in the gas slowly reacts with the jets to produce that beautiful green fuzz. Who says machines cannot produce art huh.
Anyway, clean and rejet ... or atleast clean, you may be rejetted already by sulphur corrosion. O rings only if needed and its leaking, do a bench test for that.

Cool.

5th Ave, thank you for the reply.  I've seen rebuild kits for 98-01 so maybe 02 is when they switched to three jets. I'm starting to think we need an all-you-want-to-know-about-GS500-carbs thread.

The Buddha, I saw you offered that service in earlier threads and I was wondering if you still do that. I don't need to rejet, but I'll gladly pay for you to take care of this even if the green fuzz is really yummy :P. Please PM the details and I'll ship the carbs this weekend.  Thanks!
