Flick is Sick!

I can't seem to figure out what is wrong! It started out the idle would take forever to warm up and then only get him to idle at around 1500RPM. Was at a friend's house he sprayed some WD-40 near the carbs and got a slight surge. Hmmm, seems that maybe a little leak somewhere. I took the tank off and tightened the bolts and such around the carbs. Put, the tank back on and it won't idle at all! To note also when turning the idle screw did no difference in idling actually I inadvertantly twisted it right out and no change  :dunno_black:

Flick will turn over when completely cold but won't stay running. Do WOT it surges up and immediately dies and when warm can't get the engine to turn over. So, far I have looked at the carbs they are clean and purty looking. I checked the spark plugs they are in good condition and a good blue spark. Since  I ride Flick all year it can't be old gas. I haven't gotten to checking the coils yet.

My friend that supposedlyk new about bikes knew less than I was lead to believe. While I was checking the sparks I guess he got tired of pulling the clutch in to start and was going to "create a way to bypass that safety feaature. He unplugged the wire from the left handle bar and put it back it but now U can't even get the starter to click!

Flick needs to be fixed soon! I can't afford driving the car and come the 29 I won't be abble to ride or work for a month or work for that matter!

What am I to do@

You been looking at other bikes again Mary? He seems real moody. Hope someone comes along soon and points you in the right direction.

How much were you able to tighten the bolts around the carbs? If it was the ones around the intake boots, it may be too tight causing the rubber to flex or crack. Backed out the idle screw? An air leak may be able to keep the idle up.

Only other thing I can think of is a weak battery. Oh, and a couple zip ties on the clutch lever for testing purposes.

Toogoofy317

No, I didn't tighten the intake boots. And yeah if my friend would have said to me is there something we can do about the starting I woulda said get a string or something! I'm sick and just don't want to deal with this right now! But, I have too.

I promise I wasn't looking at other bikes! But, now I'm wanting fuel injected I tell ya!

Make a quick check to make sure that after he removed the clutch safety cables from the left handlebar they didn't go back reversed, because that would make it unable to start while holding the clutch in, and only start with the clutch out. As for the rest, I have no idea.

Paulcet

Not possible to hook up the clutch switch backwards, as far as I know: the connectors are male/female pairs. But even if they were backwards it would still work. The switch is not polarity sensitive.

The engine needs fuel, compression, spark. That's over simplified, but you get the idea.

So, you have spark. I assume you have compression since you didn't mention any catastrophic noises. You recently did the valve shims, right? Have you checked the fuel level in the carbs with the clear tube method? My suspicions are with the carbs....

The spark has to come at the right time though, so maybe have a look under the right side engine cover. Maybe the signal generator is loose.

did you turn the gas tank valve back on?

does gas come out the carb drains?

want Iain's money to support my butt in kens shop

Toogoofy317

Nah it's been about 3,000 since the valve shims when the dealership did them. I'll search the clear tube method and test it. I've got the generator cover off and I'll check everything with that.

Thanks,

Hm... if you unscrewed the idle screw all the way out, you actually lowered the idle rpms to zero (if possible), try winding it back up (clockwise), and give it a try.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes.

Clutch switch is a simple single pole single throw normally open switch. Its just a mechanical switch. N o polarity. You can short the wires together if the switch ever goes bad.

Toogoofy317

Yup, wound that screw way back in but no difference  :cookoo: Working right now on him been a stressful day but i know with you guys help he will be just fine. I can fix humans but it seems today they are easier then Flick. Ok off to the generator see if it is tightened up!

True enough! I remember now what happened to me was the sliding switch was itself installed in reverse, not the wires. My apologies.

Well, damn now the starter relay is fried

Just randomly?  That's a curious thing.  I would check the voltage regulator pronto to see if you've got electrical gremlins....It could explain why flick was running so poorly.

Toogoofy317

Yeah, Scotty that is also on the list of things to check. I'm guessing that it happened from all of the cranking we tried to do or the friend messing with the switch. Either or it is dead so I bought on off of here and hope it comes in soon.

Running a fever today and chest is a congested mess. Dr. said this was stemming from an ear infection  :cookoo:  Probably viral so littly they can do!
