well long story short i was going over my bike and noticed the air filter was shot to death...the bottom cap was off and all......so i took it out and ordered another stock uni...now i had to get it home so i rode it for a mile or 2 and pooowwww  the bike started jerkin and cut out on me......i rolled it home the rest of the way and messed with it a bit and it seemed like it was flooded....anyway i got it started and it did the same thing sittin for 10 minutes....would no air filter cause this type of problem..

Well, I'm not sure how the OEM filter is arranged, and how the bottom cap falling off would affect things.  But I do know that no filter at all will make you run pretty lean.  i.e. run like crap.

i see....it ran fine before the filter came out so im guessing that must be the issue then. :technical:..im getting the filter monday hopefully everything goes back to normal...

would that mess up the floats or somethin in the carbs

if the bottom fell off and unfiltered air could get in, stuff could get all up in there and clog jets pretty easily, take off the carbs and clean them up

+1 to this. If your filter was absolute junk, a piece may have gotten in the carbs as well.

i checked the carbs today and they were good to go..also cleaned the bowls and lines...didnt mess with the jets though...gonna have to go at it again when i get the filter to see if its just actin up cuz theres no filter in place.....before i took out the old one the bike rode just fine... hopin thas all it needs

Having no filter won't clog carby jets, the dirty air is passing through the carb throat and the fuel in the float bowl and jets is not affected. The lack of restriction in the intake will change the mixture (like fitting a 'lunchbox' only more so), so that is likely your problem.
The air filter is not there to keep the carb clean, its to stop premature wear in the cylinders, pistons and rings from getting dirt, bugs and the contents of your tool kit sucked in there.

I've had trouble with cold winter starting a couple of times on GSs due to a very dirty air filter causing higher carb vacuum to suck more gas thru the choke enricher circuits and flood the engine.  Closing the choke would make it want to start but it would then need choke to keep it running.  A new air filter fixed it.  I would expect no air filter element to causea leaner mixture due to reduced carb vacuum.  Could be it would drop enough to cause the vacuum diaphram in the fuel chicken to be closing on you?  Did you try running it with the fuel selector set to prime bypassing the vacuum shutoff?

Dumb question ---> Can i wash oem filter with gas? I dont want to replace it for a while..
Mine gs does just like gsJack's

no i havent tried to run it on prime yet...i will try for sure....it starts up ok but after a while it loses power and when i open the throttle it dies....i figured it was flooding for some reason but maybe its jus to lean to produce enough power to run...or even the petcock like you said...well see what happens when i get the filter tomorrow....

Yuri.

Running with choke on should make it a little better I think...

I wouldn't run it that lean. Lean running means high temperatures. Maybe too high.

Yeah, had the same thing happen, Unifilter oem is a pos - endcap just glued on.

Bike ran badly and very lean 'til I got home and put the original suzuki filter back in.

Could it be the filter's end cap was blocking the air intake to one of the cylinders?  When the engine is running it would want to suck the cap against the intake then drop it to the bottom of the airbox when you shut it off... or am I missing something?

i drove it without any filter when i started havin trouble...i posted to see if the cause of my problems were due to not having an air filter installed

no, unfiltered air wont do anything to the jets. You could get some dirt go through the engine, but one short ride home of unfiltered air wouldnt do anything severe as far as foreign particles in the engine goes. The lean factor could however do some damage seeing as how a lean mixtures burn much hotter than a rich mixture. also can cause pre ignition and blow holes in your piston. obviously this isnt going to be the case on your bike, but it is a lean condition relation

EDIT: could burn valves, could over heat the oil and wear it out prematurely, could cause any metal parts to expand more than they're desinged to such as exhaust valve expanding enough to always be open cause compression loss and possible piston interference though im not sure it would get that close. but you get the point. over expansion of metals can break rings, valves etc.

You guys are forgetting - aside from the huge bore on the intake side of the carbs, there are 3 smaller holes as well. Two on the bottom, and one oval shaped one on top. If parts of the air filter element were to make it in any of these holes, it will clog something. Maybe not a jet, but certainly a passageway.

i got the filter on the bike and wow...what difference shes running again but somethings definitely off...not sure if its lean or rich....after it warms up the idle dies down a bit and when i try to give it throttle it dies....flooding or to lean ????...

cd

yes you can clean old filters with gas

clean your carbs, or swap in a running set. see if that corrects it
