Ya know those big round bumps the DOT puts in the road?

Don't run them over with a motorcycle... :nono:

Last Wed. I was riding the YZF to an "off site meeting" (that just happened to be at Hooters). And, I admit it, I got impatient, and stuffed a school bus into the off ramp I wanted. But had to run wide into the oncomming lane, as I arched back, thats when these 12"x6" hemisphereical bumps started.
Instead of slowing down and gently riding over them. I gunned the bike diagonally across.
That wasn't brilliant.  The bike got all out of shape and my left foot bounced off the peg and either I kicked one of the dots or it got smashed into the ground.  Either way it hurt like hell and I barely saved the bike from an ugly crash.
By the time I finished my one beer, I could feel it starting to swell so I limped home in 2nd gear (hurt too much to shift).

X-rays and CT scan show a bunch of little bones where my 1st and 2nd (big toe and the one next to it)  metatarsals should be. Doc said he didn't have enough to pin together even if he wanted to cut on me, so we are doing the "bag of bones" theory, letting the damage coalese into something like a single bone.  Monday I go back for another dose of rads to see how things are going.

Ouch. Hope you heal quick. Out of curiousity, what kind of boots were you wearing? My Joe Rockets don't seem to have great toe protection either.

JamesG

Regular squishy street shoes (another lession for ya).

They offered no protection at all. In fact I have bruising on every side of my foot which leads me to think that the shoe just compressed around my foot and tried to crush it.

Street shoes don't work.  I've put a literal divot out of my ankle in an offroad wreck before.

Ow!  :( I hope you heal quick. I occasionally ride with jeans, but the boots are a must. Of course I'm using work boots instead of mc boots. I haven't found a pair of mc boots locally that fit my wide feet yet.

I had to laugh at your "off-site meeting". Our IS department had one of those last week. We saw the Matrix at lunch.  8)  When we got back, the sign we had left with contact info had some added (unkind) comments. :)

I had a somewhat similar incident(without hurting myself).

Those big humps usually end about 12 inches from the curb, so I decide to go around at full speed with my wife on the back.  OOps, there are wet leaves beside the hump.  My rear wheel slid out on me, and I though I was going to dump.  Just when I thought we were going to dump, my rear wheel got traction again, and we continued to scoot down the street like nothing had happened.

I think wet leaves may be the biggest "unknown" danger on the road.

Hope your foot feels better.  I once broke my toe after kicking a table in the middle of the night.  My wonderful wife and I were goofing around, and she "pretended" to stomp my foot as a joke...except she really stomped my foot.  PAIN :x   I've never experienced such a sharp shooting PAIN!!

ANyways, hope you feel better and don't get stomped.

So, how'd the meeting go? (at Hooters??) :P

Glad you're OK.

JamesG

Thanks guys.

My foot is pretty well armored against myself for now.

The meetings was...  expensive for me both in money, aggrivation, not to mention loss time in the shop.

Do they take dollar bills or just fivers? :?

Heal quickly...and learn not to stuff buses ('specially school buses). Must have hurt like a mother. So it'll just be one big lump of a bone? Seems wrong. They can fix anything!

law suit from/for who?  :?

P-  No, hopefully it will heal back into something like it was.  Probably not perfectly because most of the damage is at the back end of the bone where the cartillidge and joint capsille is.

Ouch.

Those dots have made my front tire do a hop on a couple occasions.  It is unnerving for sure.  Its a bit freaky when you feel the front hop to the outside of the turn... kinda get that 'sh*t, a lowside' feeling

Doesn't it seem inherently unsafe to put obstacles on a road surface that can cause a motor vehicle lose control and possibly crash?

Maybe, but it was my own fault (excessive speed, not slowing down for them, etc...)

well, i just got over broken toe, you have  atleast 4 weeks before you can limp without gritting teeth and screaming yourself awake in the middle of the night when your wife/Girlfriend kicks your wounded foot in bed. yes, those halfsperes are made outa potmetal and are staked down. IE they dont give, we have a few of them around the airport where i work, and seen many O car tore up on them, those little lowriders just shed parts like leaves from a tree in winter.

Bag of bones theory, huh? Ouch. It should work though, as cartilidge fills in the gaps. I once tore up my ankle a bit and let it heal naturally. Now when I move it just so it makes a clicking sound that you could hear from across the street. But hey, it works, who am I to complain?
