Names Brett I'm new here, my riding history is kinda strange so here's the story. Bought a 79 GS550L a couple years ago in the fall, rode it on nice days through the winter (clear no snow, but below freezing at times.) Still enjoyed riding but wanted a sport bike after riding the 550 4 cylinder and rebuilding carbs (good learning experience.) I wanted fairings, and fuel injection. I sold the 79 and bought an 07 CBR1000RR. It was quite an amazing machine. Quite frankly, after owning that bike I can tell you with 100% certainty that the MSF course was 100% necessary, and starting with little to no experience on a liter bike is not for people with no self control. I enjoyed the bike, but sold it in the winter as I didn't want to let it sit. It's got more power than I could ever use on the streets of NJ. I regret selling it, but I wanted to purchase another car. The cure for the itch didn't come with my car though, so I stumbled upon my current 1992 GS500E. Going from 160 hp 4 cylinder, to 40hp 2 cylinder was like knowing how to run.. but only being able to walk. It's doesn't pack the thrills or the attention, it doesn't even have fairings and holding onto the bike in the wind at 75 mph feels borderline dangerous on this bike. But - it's still a motorcycle and it's still great to ride on country back roads where I prefer to ride fairly cautiously - I just enjoy riding I don't care to shred my tires off or eliminate the chicken strips on the sides... I'll take fries with that because at the end of every ride my only goal is to be alive to ride again.

With that being said, my buddies who I could ride with on the CBR won't ride with me on the GS because obviously they are at a different pace. If anybody is from central / northern NJ or eastern Pa and owns a GS that would like to meet up and ride let me know I'd be happy to.

Here is my bike:

The bike may look unusual because prior to me somebody put on a newer tank and plastic.. although they also dropped the bike so they dented the tank and cracked the rear plastic. What a shame, I try to overlook that because it operates well for it's age.

Nice to meet you all, maybe I'll see you out for a ride!

Hi Brett. I'm also in the central NJ area, I'd be interested in doing a group NJ ride. This is my second season riding and my style is similar...I'm not crazy into burning the tires or racing around but I enjoy a good country backroad too. My current ride is a 1995 GS500E...no cbr1000 for me yet! :)

I'll send you a PM, let's set up a ride sometime. Anybody else out there in NJ willing to ride? Hopefully we can get a nice crew going.

I'm a first time rider, also got a 92 GS500E about a month ago. Just like yours except dark green. I am like you, I just enjoy riding. I won't ride with the bikers I know since they want to go as fast as possible around corners and over 100mph. I just love being on two wheels.

Oh yeah, and we will outlive the other guys

Hey guys. Another central NJ rider here, and just started riding last year. Would love to ride with some other people. About the only hitch is that pretty much any riding I do needs to be during the week, not on the weekends, which I know is incompatible with a lot of other people's schedules.

But, feel free to PM me if there's plans afoot to try and do something as a group.

I have owned and ridden a lot of different bikes over the years, including a Suzuki GN125, Honda CBR125R, Kawasaki ZX10R, Yamaha R1 (crossplane version), Honda VFR700/750/800, Suzuki VX800, Honda NT650GT, Suzuki GS500E/GS500F, Honda GL1500 GoldWing, Yamaha FJR1300, Honda 750 A.C.E, Suzuki C50T/C90T Boulevard, Honda CBR1000RR, etc. etc.

Although I eventually get 'bored' of the lack of oomph in smaller bikes like the GS, I often wish I could keep one in the garage as a second or third bike. There are lots of days where I really appreciated the simplicity of the GS500, and lots of places where it might be the only bike I owned if the good roads weren't so far away. But in between here and there is a lot of traffic that it's nice to be able to get around if you want to get some clear road ahead of you without having to wind the poor bike out. So I understand how you feel when you say the bike lacks some thrills, but it's still great for just enjoying riding on back country roads.

Hope you found some good people to ride with
