Hello :)
New to forums and motorcycling.
Just got done with the Pa safety course a few weeks ago.

Bought a 94 GS500E on Monday, 15K for $750.
Mechanically sound, but visually a POS. (previous idiot decided to spray paint black Over the stock paint after a drop)
Probably shouldnt of given anymore then $600 (my first offer) but he was getting calls about it left and right the entire time I was checking it out. and a few ppl showed up after it was too late.
So I said why not, I was sick of waiting already!
The engine started, ran, and sounded perfectly fine while choked, idle, and riding.
Shifted smoothly going into 1st from Neutral.
Smoothly going slow and with some speed.
No leaks and no smoke out of the exhaust.
etc etc.. all the major mechanics checked out, brakes, clutch, lights etc...

two problems needing attention that I am unfamiliar dealing with tho.
(note" I am mechanically unfamiliar with this specific bike, the deal just fell into my lap)
the right side engine cover has some issues.
Its missing 3 bolts that I fully plan to replace.
But all around it is what "Looks" like rubber cement to seal the cover better. and whatever it was they used, they used WAY too much of it!!!
So I need to know if there are gaskets used on that cover or like I read on diff forum when I google'd the problem, that a little bit (but enough) gasket sealer is used on it when placing it back on.

But also, the Suzuki emblem Cap is missing as well and I am able to see whatever it is inside spinning. (I Dont like having anything open like that)

^^ unrelated post by someone else But the first picture is an example of the part.
The smaller cover is attached onto the large engine cover but the small Suzuki emblem Cap is missing.

I am unable to locate ... UGH nvm, "think" I just did it again, located the parts needed while posting....

Still need to know if its Just a gasket used behind the right side engine cover when placing it back on, or anything else I am missing.

the diagram
I thought that was only the Left side cover.. haha laughing at my stupidity now...
But just after typing most of this out and when I was about to link it, noticed the side I speak of is in the Back of the diagram... i was looking at it forward when I shoulda been lookin at it Backwards!
Sorry.. haha that gave me a laugh

So in the diagram, would I just need parts #11 (if emblem cap cannot be put back on due to drop damage) #13 (emblem cap) #2 (gasket) and a number of whatever bolts I am missing.
Just hope I dont need #1 (larger cover at $120)
Because I still need to buy tires, brakes and mirrors to be inspected.

and yes ty I plan to change ALL the fluids and bleed the brake lines clean before I even move it further.

Sorry, unable to take pics of it atm as its at my girls house a good half hour drive away and I seem to have misplaced my digital camera...
Still need parking lot practice to get used to the controls of a motorcycle before I go out in traffic, and her house was 5 minutes away from where I bought it.
Woulda been too dangerous anyways as the back tire is bald.

thank you :)
Any help is Well appreciated!

You dont need no steenkin emblem ... glue the top off a can of tomato puree ... tomato side out if you're into that ...

15k its a baby ... clean and adjust carbs, new oil+filter, clean air filter you should do just fine.

If you get signs of it acting up post here and we'll help trouble shoot.

Cool.

HAHA yeah I thought of something to simply place over it, but I am still too green to know if that woulda been a good idea or not.
I definitely dont wanna ride it open tho, who knows what would get in there and mess it up.

thanks :)
actually a mere $13 part.... i'll probably just buy it IF I get anything else off that site.
Anything to make it look Less then a piece of crap is needed!
Until I repaint it Properly that is.

Yeah I've been browsing this forum since I got it and its a Very helpful community  :thumb:

I only have 2 pics I saved from the ad, was removed before I could get the rest.
too distant to notice all the visual imperfections.

Main thing I need to take care of tho is the sloppy mess around the larger engine cover on that side.
Might be fine, but for how sloppy it is... its just a little unsettling.
I just dont trust it

thanks :)

(edit)
off topic tho.
also need a new headlight.
aftermarket one on there that actually looks pretty badass but the side of the fairings on it got smashed. :*(
Lights work, just too broken to be ridden safely as its not fully secure now.
gotta inspect it more to see if theres any brand name on it as I spent hours lookin at all different kinds of headlights last night and couldnt locate it.
Also dont have a pic of it from the front so I might have simply not recognized it.

Actually, that is the scariest part.  Those bolts may be broken off in the case.

Noooo!!!  >:(  dont tell me that! hahaha
too late, now I will be worrying about that until I get back up to my bike to take pics and check that and a few other things out.

haha oh well.

Thanks tho, I forgot to check if that might be the case.
I just hope the previous owner was just too cheap or lazy to replace them because there is like 3 other missing bolts I have to buy on different parts.
One on the rear grip behind the seat.
One that attaches a line from the throttle area down the fork I believe, I forget exactly where it is and where it goes because I've been looking up SOooooo much stuff and dont have the bike at home yet so I forget a few details and cant go look.
and the one tach bolt is missing.

He probably simply lost the bolts when it was being ... (shudder) spray painted, because none of the areas missing bolts have been damaged.

Def. is a visual clusterfunk but as long as its only Minor details :)
which is why I bought it.

Meh.  If they're broken off it's not too hard to drill them out and put in helicoil to fix them.  New bolts are standard M5 or maybe it's M6.  No biggie.  If you don't feel like doing this yourself, any decent automotive shop will drill, tap, and helicoil them for you for just a few dollars.
:thumb:

When my baby GS was brand new, I "retorqued" the head bolts and completely stripped one of them.  I freaked.  Turned out to be a 15 minute / 15 dollar repair.   Boy did I feel good to learn that.

As long as no oil is leaking, go ride it and enjoy.

Yea you need to send me 35 bucks for the billet aluminum one that looks like it belongs on a sherman tank.
Maybe I will make the next run with some 6 shooter type decorative machining patterns.

^^ is the shiz :)
Local salvage yard

Bought the entire Crankcase cover for $90
I just dont trust the one on there (pic below)  and yea 2 bolts are broken off pretty deep inside.
Hoping deep enough I can just slide the main cover off when I go to change it and have some nubs stickin out I can grab with some needle nose.

2 brand new mirrors at $15 a pop

Used but in Nice condition stock headlight $60 (lowest I seen on ebay was $100 I think, too tired to think straight atm)

and the best part of my morning :)
a used rear tire that I Really needed with some sweet tread left on it for only $15!
was the First one I picked up while havin a smoke waitin on my parts, I wasnt even really looking.

Along with the other bolts I needed for other things.

Broken aftermarket headlight that was on there came off easy as pie.
Stock headlight went on smooth as silk :)
Even tho the old one looked pretty neat, I'm more fond of the stock one.

old one

Frontal pic with the new used stock headlight and new mirrors :)

Better image from the side, starting to look better :)

Now to try and see if anything local has the crankcase covers gasket tomorrow.
If so, drain the old oil, change the cover and add some freshness :) & filter
Then all I would have left are brakes, air filter, battery and inspection to get on the road <3

Hell of an awesome morning for me  :woohoo:
That tire saved me around $85 that I can now use for brakes, air filter, etc etc however far it will go.
