Engine stuffed?

So i know i tend to ride my bike a bit hard, but given the 'legendary reliability' of the gs i would never have expected problems this early..

Tried to start it last night and I noticed immediately white smoke coming from the exhaust and the bike was revving at 3k idle instead of the normal 1k mark. Shortly after i smelt some burning smell maybe oil? and i shut the engine off. Checked the oil level, i had only just topped it up 2 weeks ago so was expecting plenty of oil and there was. Started it back up same thing revving really high and i could hear a rattle coming from the engine as well. The bike has only done 4,200km's so far.

Anyone know what this points to? Bad fuel? Valve adjustments necessary?

Atleast i still have warranty, but concerning to think how quickly this problem has occured. The bike has been in a bit of rain, I rode it yesterday in a slight drizzle and it was completely fine all day.

Appreciate any help

Thanks

I don't know much about bikes yet but I am a mech so I do know a little about the colors of smoke coming out the exaust , white is water , black is fuel to rich , and blue is oil . I don't know how you could get water in there thought seeing how we are air cooled .
Spring is here yea

Wondering if water has made its way into the filler cap... is it possible?

atvwarrior

Sure its possable , but probably pretty unlikely .

Going to try put a cup of metho through  the tank is completely full tho (filled 2 days ago) so cant be much water to fuel

actually ill let suzuki work it out under warranty... why not

A "burning smell" a day after "riding in the wet" is quite common. I conclude you are burning off road grime and whatever nasties were in it.

However, a burning smell with white smoke and a noisy engine on a bike with only a few thou on it from new, is not normal. Yup, let Suzuki take care of it. Hope your services are up to date. Cause if they aren't you may have voided your warranty. I would be asking WHY, on such a new bike, you had to top up the oil. My 09 is nearing 40,000 clicks and I don't need to top up the oil between services. I have done, twice, but interestingly, after the same mechanic serviced it so I put it down to underfilled.

Also, while an engine may have legendary reliability, it does require mechanical sympathy. Reliable does not = bullet proof do what you want and it'll still run. Too little is too little oil name matter what rep the engine has.

I put maybe 100ml in at most. The wiki says the gs is known to chew a little oil, so im sure this is normal. Service is due at 6k so i havent missed it.

Cheers

Did you have your 1000 service done?

If so, no way should you have needed to add any oil within 3,000kms of that.

Yes but i didn't own the bike.. I bought the bike with 1500km's and it had its service done at roughly 1400km's and then I believe it sat in a garage for 8 months without use (probably started every now and then to keep battery charged). Because from the receipt of the service having such low k's to when i bought it 8 months later it had done like 50km if that. Seller sold it for personal reasons which I am aware of. Anywho maybe the sitting or dropped the oil level? I don't know. I didnt use much oil at all though im sure its normal.

Suzuki had the bike ready the day after I brought it. I was a little annoyed to hear that their first response to the high idle was just to go ahead and turn the idle screw down. Im no mechanic but if something is idling high for a bad reason just tuning it back down doesn't sound like problem solved. They took it for a ride and when they came back they said they found that a 'vaccum hose' had come a bit loose and that this can cause a high idle. So they tightened it and thats all they did. 15 minutes and it was free of charge.

I've been riding the bike today seems normal again now for the most part, it may just be in my head but it feels as if the bike isn't as smooth on the power delivery on and off the the throttle as it was before. Before it was very forgiving now it feels a little jerky, like my mates FZ6.. Got that electric motor feel lol

mister

If the vacuum hose was a little off, then you got used to riding like that. Now it's different you think it feels odd - cause you're not used to it. You're twisting the throttle like you used to and that makes the throttle feel jerky. Give it a week of riding and see how you feel.

Good to hear nothing major wrong with it.

Remember... mechanical sympathy... and the bike will do you well.

Makes sense, thanks.  ;)

A vacuum hose comming lose can cause idle to shoot up ... spray wd40 and see what it does to the rpm.
Cool.
