Advice on rejetting and warranty

I have a "new" 09 GS500F.  Like most of you, she runs very lean.  I have to use the choke every morning when I start her and every evening when I come home (she's been out in the sun all day!) I've noticed some idling issues, as well.  After I've been on the freeways, she idles really high (around 3-4k) and sometimes will slowly come back down to normal (though, not always).

I've thought about doing a rejet, but I'm still in my original 1 year warranty period. I'm assuming a rejet will void the warranty. Should I wait the year or just throw balls to the wind and go for it?  What are the pros and cons to each?

I don't know why changing jets would void a warranty any more than changing handlebars or something else. But I don't know much about warranties.

Your high idle issue is not normal though, since you do have a warranty you might want to see if they will fix that. I don't think it has anything to do with the jets.

If they knew about it your warranty would be void, on the other hand I don't know how they would know unless you also installed an aftermarket air filter and exhaust system.

Dave, when the Engine is cold it requires choke to start. This is 100% normal and is NOT dependent on the ambient Air Temperature. In short, you needing to use choke in the morning on the way to work and again in the afternoon after work is totally normal. Even in Summer.

You do NOT need to rejet anything. My 2009 has over 40,000km on it and is totally stock.

Ride back to the Suzuki dealership and speak to a Mechanic about it. It should be Warm and doing it when you arrive so there can be no "cannot duplicate problem" from them.

There are things you can try yourself. But while the bike is under warranty, let them do it  :thumb:

I went to the dealer and talked with a knowledgable service tech.  The guy was outstanding and answered as many of my questions as he could.  He said the choke was normal, like mister said.

As for the idle issue, he said the first thing he would check is the fuel mixture screws. He told me to how to drill out the brass cap and turn them. He said if the problem still happens after about 3 turns, I should bring it in.  He was willing to do it for me, but knew that I wanted to learn and tinker, so he told me how to do it.

He said that if I wanted to rejet, that I should just look at upping the pilots and leave the main alone. He suggested it could take care of any leanness, while still keeping good gas mileage.

As far as voiding warranties, he told me that he hates that term. His explanation is that when you do something to the bike that causes some failure, the warranty may not cover that repair, but your warranty is not "void". He said he does all kinds of rejets and pipes, etc and then later has to do unrelated warranty work on the bike.

Real nice guy and really knowledgable. I plan to take my bike there for any necessary service work in the future, specifically because of that conversation. He even suggested a place I can take my seat in to get custom rebuilt if I wanted to fix some of the nicks in my passenger seat.   :cheers:
