Got a case of the Goat's

I just bought my 93 GS about a month ago, for $300.  It runs great, but doesn't charge worth a damn.  After some troubleshooting, I discover the stator isn't putting out the required voltage.... so I ordered a used one from Tb0lt, and it just came in today.  I carefully took the left side engine cover off, and find that an ENTIRE section of magnet has come unglued from the flywheel.

I have put about 300 miles on the bike without knowing about this, and there's no telling how long the previous owner rode it with the disintegrated magnetic chunks floating in the left side of the crankcase.  I've already checked ebay, and I didn't have any luck finding another flywheel assembly for cheap.

From what I searched, I should pull the oil pan, clean IT, and the strainer...  Then dump the oil and filter, put in fresh oil and filter, go 100 miles and do that about 3 or 4 times, yeah?

The scary thing is, I have had this bike up to about 100 mph, shifted it at 10K plenty of times, and it still ran great, thank GOD it didn't decide to lock up on me at 100..  Also, I will add that there are no odd noises coming from the engine, just a tiny noise in the top end, which I believe is the camshaft slop, because its not consistent.

Good, lucky you and well, maybe not just luck cos I did mine like that for a year, and that was 4 years ago ... it had 45K on it then, ran another 3K just fine. Mine was dying over prolly a year as I was getting that bang noise @startup and I ignored it.

However goat had to change the bearings cos they galled and scored the thing.

Yea clean the pan, change oil 5-6 times in 100 mile intervals and pray.

You need another flywheel assy ? why ... damage to the thing usually is very rare, though it did hit starwalt by locking the starter clutch.

Buddha, I don't think I need the flywheel assembly, I just ASSumed that it was all one piece.  Once I saw the magnet chunk missing I closed up shop and went in to cool down, mentally and physically.. Gotta love North Carolina summers; its about 85 degrees with 60% humidity...  I will have to check and make sure that my flywheel assy is good, but for now I don't think I need it. 

What is the technical term for the magnet assembly, so that I can better search for one?

Where in NC ? why are NC bikes affected with goats @ a greater rate than other states ...
Cheesy/se7nty7, mine, yours, jebz's and counting starwalt who's in sc we have 5. Yeaaaa we're #1 in goats. Yeaaaa NC.

haha Maybe after I get all of this sorted out, I too will be proud of North Carolina's high sickness rate of goats!  I am in Goldsboro, an hour south east of Raleigh.  I bought the bike in Raleigh, so I guess that's where she caught the disease... best hope there aren't any GS's in my area, since spreads like wildfire.

On another note, I did some searching and found this thread about alternative rotors that will fit our bike, is it accurate?

Average, Jebz, Dbarile, and a few more are in the raleigh area. I sold a gs to one guy in rocky mount like 6-7 years ago. But well, he's not the internet kind.

My bike came from NC also.Two years ago I got goats.I fixed that and had the starter clutch ring gear seize a mile ride later.I parked the bike for two years.Repaired it this spring,rode another 1.5 miles, had the starter gear seize and shred the starter inside.I finally replaced everything on that side,starter clutch,starter motor,and rotor.I made sure everything was 100% free of oil and cleaned all the threads.I installed everything using red loctite and torqued to max specs.So far it's holding nicely.
