Now, I been brainstorming.. My main issue with the stock shock is that its too squishy, i dont bottom out..

Issue why the gsxr shock wont work is because its too long with the spring..

So, If I put the stock shock on the GSXR shock body, ill have adjustable rebound and tension, more preload adjustability, and a stiffer shock...

Yay, nay, or pipe dream?

go for it
what do you have to lose?

make sure it has some pre-load or the spring retainer might fall off on top out

or sell it on fleabay and buy something that requires no thought to install

You mean you want to put the GS spring on the GSXR hydraulics ? You sure it will get removed with that piggyback in there ... will the piggyback fit in the shock location ?

wouldn't it be easier to just sell the GSXR shock and get the R6 one which would be a direct bolt on and also give you all the adjustments like the gsxr. seems like a lot of trouble to get a gxsr shock on and not have 100% gsxr adjustment and dynamics.

The more you mess with it, the greater the chance something will go wrong. Just buy the kat 600 shock......

He he ... we gstwinners have really skewed the market on the shocks that fit the GS. As a result a 90 katana shock is worth more than a 2008 GSXR shock. Dont underestimate the power of supply and demand. We also ran the freaking ebay world dry of kat FE's. A few years ago them things sky rocketed when everyone here seemed to be doing a kat FE swap. In a span of 2 months every Kat FE under 150 bones disappeared off ebay. Then most under 200, then 250 ...

Our solutions of swapping this and that for this and that works fine on a small scale. Start buying up in numbers and guess what - supply and demand will catch up to you.

To the OP... Your plan is a bad idea for a couple of reasons... First, it makes the following pre-suppositions:

1. That the GSX-R shock has a longer spring than the GS shock.

If the springs are the same length, installing the GS-spring wouldn't net you any benefits that couldn't be had by reducing pre-load on the GSX-R shock.

2. That the GSX-R shock has a significantly longer travel distance than the GS shock.

If the travel of the shock is the same, then installing a GS500 spring may lower the shock, but it would also reduce the overall range of travel of the shock, causing the bike to bottom out earlier.

3. Will probably require internal modifications to the shock.

Assuming points 1 and 2 are not factors, most modern springs are held in place by the tension of the spring. Simply installing a shorter spring could cause the spring to literally fall off while you're riding. You would need to install internal spacers to reduce the range of travel of the shock to make this work.

I suggest you check the range of travel for the GSX-R shock -- e.g. check if the exposed chrome tube is significantly longer than the chrome tube on the GS500 shock. If they are the same exposed length, than the shock cannot be safely modified to work on the GS, and your only option to install it would be to re-weld the upper shock mount.

Be aware also that the spring contributes significantly to the stiffness of the shock, and is a primary factor in how far the shock travels, and how well your tire grips the road. IMO, it's not safe to compensate for a significantly under-sprung bike by way over damping the shock. I'm a firm believer in getting the spring rate right before all else though, so I haven't tried it myself.

This all make way too much sense, unfortunatly.

GSXR shock will remain in FS section, as will my stock shock.

I found a kat600 shock from a 94/93 with 2000 miles, and it appears to be in good condition...

Hate to say it, but im taking the easy way. I didnt realise how much longer the gsxr shock was, and how itll have almost no suspension travel after i measured it.

Thanks for all the great replies as usual! This thred will help others searching in the future!!!

Now, to go install my gsxf600 shock!!

I doubt you'll have much luck selling the shock here. What year is it? If it's an 06 or newer, someone on the Ninja 250 forums might want it. With a few simple mods, it can be installed on their bikes.

You might also try posting it on craigslist, ebay, a local motorcycle forum, BARF (if you're already a member there and live in the area) or one of the GSX-R forums.
