Hi I have a 97 gs500 that sat for a spell . I found out that i needed a new cable and i installed it  everything was fine until i decided to paint my instrument panel and removed some things. once i put things back in order my throttles not responding correctly. once i get it running as soon as i touch the throttle the engine bogs down immediately. my idle  is high and when i attempt to adjust it on the lever it  responds . Ive tried to install the cable again a few times but I'm definitely not opening up the throttle correctly after i attempt to looses/tighten for throttle respose. It seems like  something simple but I'm frustrated and determined to get some  positive feedback from the ones who are more familiar with my situation. Ohh  a couple of times is backfired and i actually saw flames shoot out from my exhaust which happens to be after market (Leo Vince SBK) Thanks for your time and consideration as I know it is invaluable! God Bless No Stress !!!!!!

That sounds like a carb issue, especially with the backfiring. Did you rejet your carbs when you put the new exhaust on?

How long did it sit for- did you clean the carbs? What things did you remove?

Okay it sat for a while and i cleaned the carbs and got a new battery. The bike was running OK . I just recently encountered this when i attempted to adjust the throttle the 2nd time. The 1st  time was cool minus the idling problems but the throttle was responding . Now its not and it has something to do with how I installed the throttle . My adjustment at the carburetor isn't rt

Just stabbing in the dark- is the choke cable snagged up around the carb? Or maybe the carbs are out of sync somehow.......

Throttle not responding after messing with the cable is a strange one.

It could be a stick choke not pushing in all the way when the choke is shut off.I chased this problem after I got my first GS.I turned the choke on and then shot them with WD-40.Work the choke a few times and they usually free right up.
PICS are GONE never TO return.

No I really need to rejected huh?  Will it make a noticeable difference?

Yeah, if you change exhausts or air filters without changing the jets your bike is going to run poorly. If you talk to Buddha on here he can help you figure out the right jets and he'll sell them to you too.
