Strange noise when rolling.

Hi All,

I have noticed a strange noise on my gs500f when the bike is rolling. Its especially noticeable when coasting and it is a cyclic sound which seems to be related to the wheels rotational speed (but not engine speed).
i.e. when the bike is rolling fast and the engine is revving low the sound is still repeating quickly. I find it really hard to describe what kind of sound it is but i get the idea it may be a bearing. it seems to be coming from either the front or rear tyre area.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what it could be? i know that my description may not narrow down a particular problem but i am just looking for a starting point so that maybe i can google some of the possible problems
and find a youtube video with sounds etc.

Cheers

First- isolate whether it's from the front or rear by placing the bike on the centerstand. It is either wheel bearings, brake pads contacting warped rotors, or something else......

Possible Causes of swooshing/grating type sounds...

1: brake pads touching rotor (normal)
2: warped rotor
3: misaligned wheel (without feeling handlebar feedback, probably not the front)
4: chain going over front/rear sprocket because chain needs replacing and has some tight spots in it (common)
5: certain gear pair needs replacing (rare)
6: wrongly inflated tire
7: tire needs replacing
8: Wheel bearings
9: crap build up in front sprocket area
10: poorly adjusted chain going past center stand

thanks for the suggestions all. it is kind of a swooshing sound (although like i said, its REALLY hard to describe).

I will have a listen when i take it out for a ride and see if i can pin it down further.
I recently tightened and lubed the chain so im sort of confident i can rule that out.

I will let you know how things pan out.

It might be a tight spot in your chain.

Could be your chain dying a slow death.

Before I took my plastics off, i kept hearing this clinking grinding sound from up front, and id center stand it and couldn't locate the issue...

One day, I had the sense to do the same with the back, and my sprocket are so worn due to neglect, that its clinking.

may not be the obvious.
