How do you handle a stripped bolt?

Well the PO left me with a few beauty's in the way of bolts. I got my shims and installed them today, but to my surprise when tighting them down the front right (when sitting on it) was doing the tight-tight-loose thing (sigh). No wonder my head cover was filthy, if anyone saw my previous pictures. This was also the case when I changed the oil, ended up just getting it right to the edge before it became loose again, then sealed it with some gasket sealant for the time being. Really ticks me off...

I'm not sure how these things work, I'm assuming I would have noticed when I had the bolt out if it was all messed up, so does that mean is just pulled the threads out of the hole?

How much of a pain is it to, do whatever I have to do to have that fixed? And is it something I'd be able to do myself, or should I take it to a shop?

Wish I wasn't riding it, but with the weather I just can't keep off it, got a 200 mile trip set for tomorrow...and I do check the oil every trip, hasn't even gotten down halfway yet.

Have someone who knows what they are doing either drill the holes out and tap them for a bigger bolt, install time-serts, or install heli-coils.
