today started like any other day. started up suki and smoked a cig while she warms up. put on my helmet, jacket and gloves. cross the intersection my house is on to goto the bank and liquor store and BOOM..... sounded like i ran over a squirrel that just ate a lit m80 and a tire iron. immediatly stopped and looked around for whatever i ran over in the road or if something for stuck between the tire and body and what do i find!? a stupid *although new and shiny* drill bit stickin out the side of my rear tire! i never get flats like this when i was driving my cars. i pulled up to my garage and topped the air off and made a quick run to the bank and the gas station across from it and had the tech there run a plug thru it to get me by til i figure out if im gonna keep running on the tire or replace it. its right on the edge of the tread but i dont have much experience with motorcycle tires. im an automotive tech so if i go by my car standards if its an inch or less from the sidewall the tire is done. what do you guys think? she has bt45s from the po that only have about 1800 miles on them but the rear does have some good sidewall cracking. should i get a new tire or replace it? and tomarrow im goin down to the dealer to finally get the gaskets to fix all her leaks. timing sucks.

the tread got alittle messed up after he reamed it for the plug. looks alittle worse in person.

Personally, there is NO chance I would keep riding on that tire. The thought of it catastrophically failing while riding down the freeway is not pleasant.

I vote replace it.Safety and living dictate to me that no one should take a chance on $100 to $150 tire replacement.

Damn. Oh well. I was already leaning toward the safe side but you guys pushed me over. I didnt like the idea of cruising 75 80 on the 57 or 91fwy with that tire anymore. Any recommendations on a new tire? Everyone seems to swear by the sport demons. Anyone have some second hand ones that will get me by til the front wears down? Or should i replace them both? :icon_sad:

Make sure that the new tire type matches the front. They should both be radial or bias. Not one bias and one radial. It makes for dangerous handling mixing tire types. The tire side wall will have it stamped on there.
