Going to pick up my GSXR front end - What tools do I need to remove it?

Hey guys,

Got a line on a kick-ass priced '03 GSXR 750 FE and I'm planning on going to pick it up tonight.

The guy wants me to pull it off the parts bike myself...

Rather than bringing a whole tool box, I thought I'd ask if any of you guys know what will be required to remove it from the bike.

Mind you, this is just what I need to get it in the back of the truck and home... trying to minimize tools and time.

Thanks for you help!

btw... WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FOR USD FORKS AND DUAL BRAKES!!!!!@1@1!

Just guessing here

But I'd bring all your metric sockets & wrenches, and metric hex.

I'd bet you'd need 12mm, 14mm, 17mm for sure, best to have 10mm and 20/22/24mm (not sure how much taking apart you'll need to do) for the sockets / wrenches.  If you don't have all those sizes bring a couple of adjustable wrenches.

You'll probably have to remove the front fairing / light / gauges / etc. until you can get to the top & bottom of the tripple, and once you get that loose and apart you should be able to pull the whole front end as an assembly.  Keep in mind I haven't done this on a GSXR, but I have done it on the GS500.

It really depends on how much stuff you have to remove, which also depends on how the bike is supported. Not sure about the 03 models, but on 04 & later, this may require some speciality tools...

Minimally, you'll need to remove the upper tripple clamp, and lift the bike off the lower tripple. Using this approach means lifting the front end of the bike bike a foot or so off the ground. You could also try removing the front wheel, and dropping the complete assembly off the bike (if the bike is supported by other means) or disassembling the complete front end.

IIRC, it will take some speciality tools to get the upper triple off. In a pinch, a punch and hammer will do...

You will probably want to bring a complete allen wrench set to remove any necessary bodywork, clip-ons, fork pinch bolts, calliper bolts, etc. Complete metric socket set would also be helpful. Investigate what tools are needed to remove the front wheel; you may need to buy a motion-pro front wheel tool, which looks like a big ass allen key... But in a pinch, a large bolt and a set of vice grips/pipe wrench/pliers might work. You may also need a big-ass socket. Check on one of the GSX-R forums.

Hammer and punch will also be useful as mentioned above.

I assume the guy would frown on you just showing up with a sawzall?
'04 F to an E to a wreck to a Wee Strom?
HEL stainless brake lines
15W fork oil
Kat 600 Rear shock
K&N drop in and Buddha jets
It wants me to go brokedie.

haha, I'd way rather use the sawzall!

Looks like I'll need a 32mm socket for the upper bolt but can get away with a big crescent, and I'm supposed to use a specialty tool to get the lock nuts off but a hammer and a 1/4" extension or a blunt flathead or something should do it.

The bike is mostly in pieces and has no motor or fairings. I'm planning on taking the upper clamp off, removing the stem bolts and just sliding the whole front end off, wheel and all.

probably just going to bring a metric socket kit, metric allens, a hammer, a rubber mallet and a big screwdriver. Not about to go buy new tools if it's not totally necessary right this second.

Looks like I got an even better line on an K6 750 FE for even cheaper than the K3 would have been. Can I get a Hi5 for Showa USD's and radial calipers!? annnnd, another Hi5 for it already being pulled off the bike!?

Yussssssssssss.

The GSX-R front end is externally adjustable, with cartrage internals. It's *way* better than the Kat front end... Like, night and day difference.

Hell yeah. I was originally gonna go with a TL1000R setup because I had it... but then I got a line on that '03 gsxr FE and it got me thinkin... and while I was looking for some other stuff I ended up finding out about the '06 setup and game over. I wouldn't have gone through the trouble of doing the Kat FE. Doesn't seem worth it imo, I'd have gone with new springs/emulators/oil/pads before a kat FE.

By the time I get the steering stem done for this swap I'll have my kat rear wheel, some metzeler M3's and an r6 shock to go on with it. (on their way)

Now you've got the suspension and brakes sorted all you need is a nice I4 motor to give it some get-up-and-go.

Oh, and a nice ally frame to tie all those bits together, it'd be the hottest GS around............. :D
