The parts I ordered to fix the problem identified in my earlier thread - http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=57536.0 - arrived today. But I find I have another problem.

Here are close ups of the problem area:

Here are the parts I ordered:

The new parts are from a 2005 engine, which I thought I had. The engine, as determined by mister in his thread - http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=57564.0 - is a 2000.

The cap piece won't go in the existing hole because the thin black part which turns the tach is protruding into it. I'm guessing on the 2004 and later models this part isn't there and the cap fits right in? So, is this piece something I could remove without too much difficulty, or is it part of something that is needed or would require major surgery to take care of?

If I can't do anything about getting the cap on, could I buy a tach cable for a 2000 engine and attach it to prevent the oil leak and just tie it off somewhere?

Any thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated.

looks like you need to pull off that entire thing (that one bolt) and put the new thing in its place...

2001 GS500 (being torn apart)

Does that mean the (for lack of the proper term) 'thing spinning black piece that would drive the tach' is not attached to something deeper in the engine and would come off if I took off that housing with the one bolt?

yes, its just a gear driven spinny thing, maybe call it the Tach Output Shaft? if you pull off the part it will just unsync with the gear on the cam shaft and pull out.

Ok, thanks. Will check it out tonight after work.

Done. Worked as described and everything looks good so far. Thanks for all the help.
