I live in an old house. My sons room needs new carpet. The rest of the house is hardwood. Thought surely there would be hardwood under the carpet.

WRONG. 1960's Formica tile. Not linoleum, but thick plastic tile like in government buildings. Nasty medium grey.

A penny room would look nice...

Oh, you mean old vinyl/asbestos tile? That hard, brittle stuff that over time will conform to every defect in the floor. The 12" square tiles?

Yep.  Glued it right over top of beautiful hardwood.  I have no idea why. 

That also explains when I took out the old Aprilaire humidifier control thingie that never worked...I found fuzzy wallpaper that was Chartruce Green.

Oh the styles that have gone in and out since 1930.
