Rattle in Speedometer and Tach

Hi All,

New to the forum but my name is Mark and I'm from CT.  I have a 2004 GS500F which I picked up this August used with about 12k miles on it.  Great starter bike and I've been having a great time on it this summer.

I have noticed a rattle in the front end when I hit any type of bump.  I think I've pinpointed it to the speedometer and tach faces being loose.  More so the tach than the speedometer.  I've tried to tighten the nuts at the back of the assembly but they seem to be tightened as far as they can go and I don't want to crack the assembly.  I tried adding another washer in case the nut was bottoming out but then the tach nut won't tighten all the way.

Anyone come across this issue and resolved it?  Is it maybe that the Dampers or/and Cushions have gone bad?

I have the exact same problem and I was really wondering what could it be

I originally though it was the bracket where it met the frame but I tightened that and still have the rattle.  I checked the speedometer and tach and they move around in their housing so that must be it.  I don't want to crack the housing by over tightening it.

There should be a pretty easy solution.  I'm going to probably get nuts with longer threads so it will tighten a bit more.  That's cheaper than buying a new damper or cushions.

Any other ideas more than welcome.  If I have to buy a new damper or cushions I will but I didn't they went bad.  I'll play with it today and post if I have any progress.

Go with washers and put a couple in there to tighten it down....

Only problem was when I put an extra washer under the tach and tried to tighten it the nut would catch and then tighten a bit but once I got the tried to crank it a bit with the wrench it just kept turning and came loose.  I don't want to strip the nut so I'll try a few different washer sizes and see if it works out.  It's almost like the nut doesn't have enough thread to tighten all the way.

I had a vibration/rattle that I thought was coming from tach/speedo but it turned out to be the windshield.

Get washers with an inner diameter greater then the non-threaded part of the stem... that is what i did... would post pictures but cant find my camera

Try replacing the gaskets underneath they are like $5 from the dealer. I noticed after 3-4 years they got stretched out and got a rattle replaced it no rattle. Also, there are three little screws in the back of the face plate that can cause rattle too.

I figured out what the issue is.  The nuts on the back of the aren't grabbing properly because the screws are a bit stripped at the end.  Unfortunately I can't change the screws because they are part of the speedometer and tach and that would be costly so I'm going to try just getting some open nuts so they won't bottom out and can be screwed on a bit farther.
