Update 11/4/2011 - got impatient. Wasn't able to find an engine close enough for a reasonable price. So this projects failed, and has been parted out... My next project will NOT be parted haha. i need to learn how to fix one not chop it up

ORIGINAL POST:
the short: Just purchased a black/silver 2006 gs500F with needed engine work this past weekend.  she's got 15k on the clock, a few scuffs on the plastics, not running, but overall in decent condition.

The goal is to fix it up and sell as a complete bike. if i can't get the engine going(or source another for a good price) i'll probably end up parting her out.

ramblings: Got it from down in Atlanta from a kid who knew nothing about moto's. he was having trouble getting it running, so he took it to a mechanic that know Nothing about moto's haha. i told the kid i'll be pulling some parts to have a look for myself. the plastics, tank, and exhaust were off when i got there. Went to pick the tank up, turned it over and gas started pouring out of the petcock. i quickly grabbed my tools and shut off the valve. the kid was astonished he said his mechanic worked for 15 minutes(before he gave up) to figure out how to turn the tank over w/o putting his finger over the hole!

got the bike on the trailer and started looking at it closer. the exhaust wasn't there! not sure how i missed it before. so i ask the kid, "where's the exhaust?' to which it replied, "what's that? does it need it?" i tried to hold a straight face, my friend didn't haha he busted gut laughed out loud.

there were too many noob questions to list on here. one of my favorite's, " nobody's been able to answer this for me.. is this clutch handle custom??" hahaha the lever's basically folded over itself..

The Bad: Was told that it has a bad piston or crank. When i dropped my battery in it and tried to turn it over i get similar situation as this thread:

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=45438.msg657646#msg657646

hoping it is just that, but won't be able to tell until i spend some time with it. will be getting some time off work in the next week to wrench.

anyone have a engine assessment for dumbies? haha this is the first time i'm trying to get one running. would like to find a trick to see if its the crank/piston before i spend time on the stator issue. i have it parked on my back porch so there's not much room to roll it around.. could i turn the engine over if put it in gear, on center stand, and turn the wheel by hand?

dude you just made me laugh! "whats an exhaust" bhahah wow and custom clutch handle lol wtf is that thing? how in the hell do you drive with that thing bent like that unless you got midget hands...
How u pay for you if you dont mind me asking?

KlaXon

Take out the left side engine cover and check generator rotor bolt. I think that bolt can be loose.. if starter spinning but dont spin the engine

thanks klaxon, i'll check that when i'm down there tonight.

i got my mate to help me roll it around yesterday. i'm still pretty noobish when it comes to engines, but it seemed to turn over. i feel like i could hear a piston drop or some sort of metal clunk, which can't be good haha. it was starting to rain so i put it back under cover and called it a night

Looks like a whole lot of rust lurking on it too.

I hope the kid paid YOU to haul his junk away :D

well i've tightened everything, checked the starter motor, and cam chain. got it to turn over one good time and heard a major clunk, had to be the piston dropping.

i'd really like to see her on the road again. i've found an 06 engine, but its 7 hours away. she might end up getting parted out..
