Those are for the PAIR (PARE?) emissions control stuff. You can either buy the parts that go there (which I don't know what they are) or block them off (which people have done). I assume a newer engine? The year would help. Older engines have the ports but they are already plugged up. It might be that they were only necessary for California models on older bikes due to their emissions requirements. I know Calif. models did have a smaller gas tank with an extra vent (that everyone plugs up, including me as I have one CA tank as a spare, the purple one I recall if you see pix of my bikes).

Any California people with older bikes know if this is true?

I'm kind of in the same position as you. I have a bare 2006 engine I'll be making work so I have to learn where everything goes. I do know I'll need the correct ignotor box and wiring harness for the ignition pickup unless I modify that. Then there are the carb sensors and throttle position and a few other things on newer carbs and engines.

FYI: Older engines had 2 pickups. Newer ones have one. The ignotor box is different. Newer carbs have extra sensors and vacuum stuff that older carbs do not have.
Start something in the projects area and include pictures. Maybe we can exchange info there as we both figure out how to hook up a motor from scratch.

Have you checked out the Everyone's buildin a bobber, then they want a 200% profit on their POS thread in Odds and Ends. Hope we don't see your bike make an appearance there...
