Using GS500F carburetors from different model years?

Hey Guys,

I was having an issue with a stripping a seized idle mixture screw in my carbs a while back. I'm going to try to get it out one last time but I'm afraid I may have damaged the threads using my drill, and the bike isn't running correctly. If that is the case I'll need to get new carbs (I know I can just replace that side, but I'd rather not go through the hassle).

My questions is, can carbs from different model years of the GS500F be fit onto the bike without issue? My bike is a 2005, and I know those carbs are somewhat different from the E models, but are they interchangeable within the same model? Thanks!

In general, yes, '04-'09 have the same carbs and are interchangeable.

However, c.2007 Suzuki added the PAIR system ("2nd AIR" on parts fiche) as standard to the F. Unless your '05 F was a California model, your bike will not have the PAIR system. Not a big deal as long as you know to seal off the extra inputs/outputs & vacuum lines on the '07+ carbs. Compare the parts fiche for the carburetors from '05 to '07-'09 and you should get a pretty good idea of what I'm referring to.

As always, others should feel free to correct me because I'm human and am capable of making errors.

Okay I was able to call a few dealers and it sounds like what you said coincides with their info. 2004-2006 had one part number for each carb and the parts guy told me he had to switch screens for anything after 2006. I don't think my bike is a California bike. I'm on the east coast, and though it could have been moved out here I think that's unlikely. Any idea how I can check?

I was able to find a couple good used ones but they are all 2007 and up. Do you know specifically what ports needs to be closed off like you mentioned? I'd like things to go smoothly when doing the installation.

If I recall correctly, you can tell by the VIN whether it has the CA emissions. I believe the Haynes guide has the definitions listed, but I'm not at home so I can't double-check myself.

I'm not sure exactly what you'd need to do, but you can take a look at the pics in this item from ebay. It may be as simple as the vacuum line that goes to the 2nd AIR off one of the T connectors. If you look in the 3rd & 4th pics in the ebay listing, you'll see the skinny black vacuum line that goes to the bottom right in one and the top right in the other. That line goes to the PAIR system and would need to be blocked off. Not sure off the top of my head what else would need blocked, if anything.
