still troubleshooting but a change in motivation!

if the bike doesnt sell, then I am just going to rip the top end of this engine apart as well!
If it isnt a fuel problem atm tho, as to why it wont start now. (tank was low and gas looked cloudy)

Inspect, fully clean everything, and swap out anything thats in worse condition then the old motor.
and replace all the gaskets.

So, if the sale falls thru.
expect me to continue with the self torture! haha  :cookoo:

(edit)
finally got ahold of him.
will know Saturday if he is going to buy it or not.

Not to derail the build stuff, but how many cans of the Metal Specks paint did you use?
I plan on using it also (different color) and wanted to get a feel for how many i should buy.

no problem at all.
I would rather this thread go in ANY direction now other then my constant problems and b!tching.

but you didnt go into detail on all the parts you plan to paint.

Since it was my first time painting anything other then a brick wall, I was sure to purchase more then I thought I would need.
which luckily I was just about spot on.

every piece you see on the bike that is red took a total of about I would say 6 to 8 cans of it at $11 to $12 a pop.
I would honestly start off with 4 if you plan to do Alot and see how much you need after that.

and be sure to figure out different locations for Auto Zone, Advanced Auto and Possibly Pep Boys.
I cant recall if I bought any from pep boys but I know I bought cans from the other 2 stores.
and everytime I went, they only had 2 cans of each color on the shelf.
So I had to stop at 2 stores when I bough the 4 cans to start with.

what color you goin with?
The blue looks really good too and I wish I had something I could have used it on too.

and to give a rough estimate of how much 1 can sprays.

I painted the gimbel headlight cowl and the top clamps for the handlebars with 1 can.

when I painted the rear fairings (2 sides and small middle piece) front fender and the tank, I used about 3 cans.
add in a 4th for the misc. parts I also painted.

and if you mess up and need to repaint, pay attention to what you use.
I had to when the rear fairings didnt come out so good the first time.

I'll be going with the silver for the main color. Tank, front fender, rear plastics.
Black knee contour (haven't decided on gloss black or flat black) and red pin striping.
The sparkle silver is what i plan on using.

I'll need lots of misc. black too (top triple, bottom forks, head light, small odds and ends)
and probably one can of the "metal-cast" red for tiny accents.

Anyway, thank you! Now i at least can formulate a target budget.

Tombstones81

why does everyone want or go with flat black?
Its as UGLY as my bike was from the PO's paint job with no clear coat!
haha

I have never liked flat black, it looks...  like a kid did it with a spray can.

NOW, that being said, a person who can paint a good satin coat, maybe a two tone look, gets my attention.

I think mine came out Perfectly for being a spray can job.
the red anyways.
and I can honestly say its mostly do to that very good clearcoat.
as I did the headlight cowl in a cheaper clear and it didnt turn out so good at all.
yes I plan to redo it if the sale falls thru.

I had mine done in flat black and i liked it, but i had it done by someone who does painting it for a living. When i get a set of F fairings for my bike i will go with a different color, thinking of white, because i will also be doing a different tail so i won't have any rear plastics on the bike. But i agree it you spray panting it flat black most come out looking like a 10 year old did it that's why i had someone do it that knows what they are doing.

Flat black only to contrast with the glossy shiny silver for me. But i'm not settled on that yet. Definitely doing black knee contours, but dunno flat or gloss.

yeah, im just kinda depressed right now honestly.
not that it didnt sell.
Just my typical bad luck is getting to me.
aka: instead of either of us changing our minds, it was bad luck for both that his car has bigger problems.
I would have been fine if either of us changed our minds tho.

but when it comes to natural occurrences.... its always bad. hahaha

its all good as far as my bike goes.

i'll have the current funk fixed when I get to it again.
pretty certain the one intake valve is too tight now.
I had 155s in there when they were too loose, or 1 155 and something else, i forget at this point.
Wanted to swap 2 160s in it and be good but I could only find my one 160, so I put a 165 in the other.
Just to see if that fixed the failure to start problem.
which it did.

and of course, then I found my other 160 shim.

i'll put that in probably tomorrow morning when I wake up and hopefully be 100%.

if not, top end is coming apart!!!

(edit)
screw it!
Im in a crummy and bored mood.
Going to go out and do some work on it while its still light out.

nope! no good at all.

yeah, the one intake was loose.
Got it to .07 with a quick swap.

Now the same current problems and old ones appeared....

First, started fine and choked fine...
Then it began to bog and die again when I added throttle.

After a bit, it just died and didnt wanna start again.
When cranking, would backfire quite loudly out the exhaust.....

hell with it!
rippin this sumb!tch apart tomorrow!
starting with the head and inspecting the valves from ALL sides now.
but even if they are good, im putting my old head on it as i KNOW those are 100%!!!

as for the cylinders, pistons, and rings....
I'll be taking a look at them too.

but so far it def appears to be valve related as everytime I touch them, something goes amuck!

(edit)
and yes I plan to reuse the bolts and copper washers (FOR NOW!)
this top end appears as if it was never taken apart.
so im going to swap over what I have to and take EXTRAAAAA good care to take the copper washers out carefully and to put them all back in Exactly where I took them out from.

if it starts and runs 100% like my old engine... GREAT!
if a leak appears... fine, i'll replace the bolts and washers. (as long as its running 100%)
if no leaks appear, i'll order some anyways but give it time to see how it acts.

Sounds like a sticky valve. You got it right, swap head for known good head. beat that thing into submission! Make abusive threats involving a BFH! Lol

Tombstones81

Yeah its def something with the valves.
As when I took that video going around the block (below) that was the second time around and it acted fine.
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=3581821105393

But then a little later when I got all geared up for a run around town... it acted up as if I didnt do anything to fix it.

its all good tho.
chillin for a few minutes, then im headed out to get this sucker done and running 100% TODAY!!!

makes me sad tho....  I made such a big deal over an oil leak.
but when even bigger things go wrong and stay wrong... makes it seem like nothing ever happened lol

so yeah, at this point I would welcome an oil leak if it ran 100%! hahaha

ok thats it for now.
taking my camera out with me and taking pics of my process as long as I remember to haha

update when im hopefully done and not when I run into a problem.

ok all good now.
Time to get busy!

oh yeah, almost forgot another reason why the old engine was probably leaking...
I did not know until yesterday that the outer engine bolts are slightly different in size then the inner ones.
not sure if I did, but I might have mixed some up without knowing they were different.

I would still prefer the work im doing today tho instead of taking a gamble and putting the old one back in.
unless the bottom end of the new engine looks bad in even the slightest bit.
if I decided to take the cylinders out that is.

kk out I go!

Knew it was something with the actual valves and not the clearance...

Found the problem!

the one exhaust valve is not sealing properly.

other 3 are fine but I still plan to swap heads.

and I am SOOOO friggin happy!
the copper washers on this one Slide down.
my other ones screwed on, which is what screwed Me with them! hgahaha
so they came off Perfectly without a nitch in them!

but sadly, when I was pulling the head up, the cylinders slightly came with it.

so now those came out as well.

cylinder walls look 100% but need to be honed.

heads of the pistons looked good but I didnt check the rings out yet.

kk back out I go.

but so far, can I get a Hell Yeah!   :thumb:

(edit)
pistons and rings 100%!
300 more miles on them then my other engine and look 10X better!!
