Center stand hitting chain

Similar to my other topic, you guys are probably going to be getting a lot of these questions from me as I figure out what's wrong as I go along.

Bought a 1990 GS500E about a month ago, but surprisingly it's taken me awhile to figure this out. When I'm riding, I kept hearing a "clink" here and there but it wasn't consistent so I didn't know what it was at first. Fast forward and I now know that it's because the center stand is hitting the chain when I go over bumps in the road or if I'm momentarily in too low RPMs and the bike is chugging. I just went outside and checked the play and it's ~1 inch in the middle of the chain, which is within the range it's supposed to be. I'm wondering if there's supposed to be something holding the center stand down from the frame a little bit or if it actually is the chain.

Edit: Just saw this thread and actually was thinking about putting some rubber on mine where it hits the frame since I have a custom Vance and Hines exhaust. Is there a good recommendation for something to put on to stop it from bouncing and hitting the chain while riding?

I have a V&H on Junior. The center stand is actually lower than with a stock muffler. I don't recall adding anything. I can check him tonight when I get home.
Your chain maybe too loose.  How did you measure? Total - pushed up to pushed down or how far down from straight across from front to rear sprocket?
Maybe the spring on the center stand or side stand is weak or broken (there are 2 springs - one inside the other) and its bouncing when going over a bump.
Did you change the rear shock so your swing arm is lower than normal ( i.e. stock)? That would put the chain lower.

Pictures?

Chain side of Junior:

Junior with V&H and Gimbel rear set. I'll have to see if I added any bumbers. As I recall, it was lower than stock so worked out OK with the gimbel rear set for clearance on the left side

Stock muffler before V&H - bumpers added because the center stand interfered with the Gimbel on the left side (foot lever too high between peg and shifter).

Probably something bent.

After my first wipe early in the season, I noticed mine sometimes hitting the center stand.
never did it before either, and chain was properly adjusted.
It was also alot closer to my heel then before.

couldnt get the center stand off because I wasnt about to take my exhaust off again for it.

and ty, reminds me to inspect my center stand now that my bike is fully dismantled.

my problem indicated either a very slightly bent center stand or where it mounts.
which I will check out tomorrow.

Here are the close ups of the V&H mounting bracket. You can see nothing was added and the center stand is MUCH lower than stock.
Just wondering - did you leave off that center stand stop-bracket??? If not there, the center stand would go really high - too high.

(I guess Junior is rather clean for a 1992!)

I wasn't the one who put the exhaust on. One of the many previous owners did.

I found a piece of rubber I can probably tie up somewhere under the bike, so I'm gonna go and see if I can do that.

I have seen one genius fit a chain with the bike on side stand, and he had the centerstand above the lower leg of the chain. Couldn't put it down ...
Cool.

Ha ha, I don't think I'd have bought the bike even as a total newbie if I saw that.

So...... some tard of a previous owner left off the center stand bracket?  :cookoo:
Does that mean your center stand is resting on the knuckle? Eeeeeeeewwwwwwww

I have found that book my the Mexican guy that comes with things you buy is really helpful. Let's see, what is his name? Oh.....   Manual.  Electronic version by his  brother:  eManual (There are Christmas songs about him: Oh come Oh come eManual.....) Same guy wrote a song for people waiting for their pictures at the photo lab, featured in a Disney movie: "Someday my prints will come..."

Sometimes they leave out his book and you get those things for your bed. Flat sheets? no... fitted sheets?..... no... oh instruction sheets. (dry clean only)  :bs:

(not poking fun at you - just the  previous owners.)

Watevaman

Yeah, I'm wondering how they didn't notice the stand bouncing and the pinging every time they rode the bike.
