Whoever is getting ready to rejet your bike. When you pull the brass plugs to adjust the idle bleed screws could you please count how many turns it is set at at stock!

Thanks!

Marry,

You didn't send your carbs off to Buddha?

I will be rejetting hopefully this week. I too am getting a Buddha special and I hope mine turns out better than your did.

Are you putting it back to stock with stock jets???

Give us the low down O0

I've pulled many a bra-ss cap ... and counted anywhere from 2.5 to 1.5. They didn't set them all that accurately. Maybe I hit some wiht my drill and these are lefties so it would likely unscrew ... however I also dont have full drills ... mine have stops so I dont blow through ... but of course contact is possible cos the cap itself can sink as you drill it and you'd never notice.

Anyway you set em to 3 turns Mary when you rejet, some people need to go further in, but most of them go out a bit, and I sometimes have to change em summer vs winter, out for winter.

Cool.

If you're planning to drill the brass caps, put a length of rubber tube over the drill bit so that just the tip is showing. The rubber tube will act as a stop, helping to prevent you from drilling into the screw below. The better the fit of the tube, the better it will work. Just use some sanity. :)

If the carbs haven't been apart before your going to have fun removing the screws.
Wiki explains all,

Also purchase replacement hex head screws in the sizes listed at the bottom of the wiki before you start ;)

Yes, I've gone back to stock. I don't have time to send them out at this point. My car is broke down. I've got Flick running. I just want to know what it is from stock then I can go back and tweak. The brass plugs have been out a LOOONG time ago I know how to do that. I'm just trying to get an idea. I'm going about this like I do my schooling I'm setting all my Independent variable to stock and then working on my dependant variables at a time. My issues right now really aren't carb it's fuel starvation. Not sure if a little bit too long of a hose can cause this. Or if my petcock is shot or my cap isn't venting.

This doesn't answer your question, but when I opened up my carbs last week, I found that the idle screws were set to 5 turns!  Someone got enthusiastic.  Geez...

Thanks, kinda interesting I was able to get flick to start today after turning it all the way in. After I'm warmed up Flick is golden it is just start up now.

About rejetting. On the Motorcycle superstore web site there is a comment on the Dyna stage III from a GS500 owner who says the bike only ran properly when he replaced the dyna needles with the stock needles.

About jet kits in general. Most of them sell you parts at a good triple the price. They can get you close but allmost allways there is need to fine tuning (trying one size up or down etch...). This is more complicated by the fact that often the numbers are not there on the parts you get.

Often you can get a good idea what size an unmarked jet is by taking a tapered needle and noting how far it goes in.

Before rejetting make sure every thing else is in order (valve lash and timing for instance). There is a technical pubblication by DellOrto wich has great information on figuring out what the proper jetting should be.

ghostrider_23

AGAVE248 do you have a link to the info on DellOrto?

I don't know why you guys just don't buy the kit from Buddha  :dunno_black:
I just purchase a kit for $20 WHEN THE other kits are like $80
His jets are number and he is willing to help guide you through.

Don't try and reinvent the wheel, go to the Buddha

I don't have a link to the technical pubblication. I have the actual print version (which I have to dig up). I know you can inquire about it at the moto internatinal site or the cosmo motors web site. The copy I have just says DellOrto a guide but no numbers for the manual.

It covers mostly P and V series carburetors (round and flat slides). It does the best job I've ever seen in explaining how carburetors work and how to determining sizing and tuning with out expensive special tools.

I am working on putting together a GS 500 basket case at this time. However the project is on hold for now because I have two engines I have to put together first.

I simply used the numbers from the wiki to order the jets at the dealership. I payed less than $20 (CAD) for the four jets. The jets I got and the ones that came out of the bike all had their sizes stamped on them. It's tiny print but it's there.

Oh thank goodness I'm not the only one that couldn't see the numbers :icon_eek:

I had to go get a magnifying glass to see those little suckers
