:bs:  So I finally got my 01 GS 500 running pretty good after a few battles with dirty carbs and carb lines mis-routed by the P/O.  The only thin g left to address was a slight hanging\high idle.  I ordered jets from Buddha to richen it up a bit and the next step is to get new manifold and manifold o-rings. That being said, I have ridden her to work for the last three days (55 mile round trip).  She has run fine for the most part each day until I went to leave work about an hour ago.  I fired it up wit the choke and let it run to warm it up.  It only ran for 30 seconds or so and then stalled.  I was suited up, so I sat on it and held the throttle a bit after starting her again to get her warm. After a few minutes, I pulled off down the road and she stalled less than  a block away.  I figured that she still needed to warm up more, so I held the throttle while she warmed up a bit more.  Again I tried to pull off, but got some muffled backfiring and stalling.  I tried all different settings on the petcock, but none seemed to change it.  I was finally able to get her going and got on the highway, although it seemed like  the choke was on (it was not).  If I opened up the throttle too fast on the highway, it would surge and cut out really bad and almost come to a rolling stall, then it would regain power and run decent again, only until the next time I opened the throttle too fast, then the same shaZam! happened....over, and, over....all the way home! So I finally get it to my house and pull her into the garage....I notice gas starting to leak from the are of the rear shock........a better look revealed that it was coming out of the airbox vent tube (like 3-4 ounces of fuel!).  While riding it home, I was thinking that the petcock/screen, or jets could have gotten partially blocked by some crud that got stirred up in the tank........but now that I see the fuel dump, I am thinking that  lack of fuel is not the issue.  The only thing that I can think that this could possibly be would be that a main jet came loose in one or both of the carbs........Any other ideas?  This came on suddenly, and seemed to get worse the further into my ride that I got.......

Maybe a stuck float?  Leaking petcock diaphragm?

Those are the first things I would check.

Thanks for the response.....hopefully, I will get into it today (day off).  I just rebuild these carbs with new needle valves and needle valve seats and the floats were working flawlessly when I put it back together the other day.  I verified that the petcock was working properly too before I buttoned it up the other day, but maybe it has just up and gone bad.  The only other thing I can think of would be a pinched carb vent line...the vacuum would be providing plenty of fuel to the carbs, but the carbs won't breathe naturally.....the bike would run fine then worse and worse...when they get enough pressure built up in them, they burp......and then the bike would run fine again but gradually get worse and do the same thing over and over...?  Sounds feasable, but nothing was disturbed between the ride to work, and then the ride home from work?????  Any other suggestions?

That's not a bad idea, and easily checked.  Just pull off your carb vent line and make sure it's completely clear.

I don't remember, did clean out your gas tank and check for rust?  I would think a sudden issue like this could be due to rust particles getting caught somewhere in the carb.

i swished the fuel around a few times and dumped it.  I will be pulling the tank petcock to check and see what the screen looks like too.

Pulled her apart and found that the right float was sticking.  The aftermarket needle valves have the wire hangers on them that go around the float tab, however, they are not closed (if that makes sense) like the factory ones.  They do not come together without a gap on the bottom of the float tab.....apparently the fule must've caused it to spin a bit and then the float tab got caught on the open end of the wire, causing it to remain open, therefore flooding the shaZam! outta my bike!!!!  I'm gonna run to the auto parts store to hopefully find an assortment of nitrile 0-rings to see if I can solve this hanging/high idle, and then I will see if the wire hangers from the factory needle jets will fit on these new ones because I see this happening again.......... :technical:

Make sure you check valves too. I had similar problems was chasing for months with the hanging idle etc. Ended up doing a top end rebuild!

thanks, i shimmed the valves when i did the initial breakdown/rebuild after i got it.  three were out of adjustment, two exhaust valves were way, way too tight!
