1990 GS500E - rear rack and exhaust smoke

Hey everyone,
I recently picked up a 1990 GS500 and I have two questions that I hope someone could chime in:

1) does this SW-MOTECH (twisted throttle) rear alu rack fit on my 1990 GS 500?

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/238

2) When I start up my engine with the choke open smokes comes out, but after a minute or so the engine revs to 4k and I close the choke half way and the smoke disappears. I'm new to carburetors, is this typical? or is there concern? The bike is riding great and behaving very well otherwise.

3) Also, I notice when the smoke comes out my exhaust there is a tiny pin hole underneath/bottom of my pipe, but it looks like it belongs there as the heat shield curves around the pin hole. Has anyone else noticed this? I'll take a pic when I have a chance.

Any advice will be welcomed!

I can't comment on #1 or #3, but #2 is normal, nothing to worry about as far as I've heard

I have that rack on my "F" 2009. The plastics are different and won't fit right on an "E" (I have both models). There is a Renntec rack that does fit nicely. I have that on one of my bikes.

Exhaust hole: Yes, I have one with it. I believe it is a tiny drain hole for water in the exhaust so it doesn't rust away.

Some of mine smoke a little when cold and then goes away. Fairly normal, I believe. Others may chime in on this. All 3 of my GS500's act the same way.

Looks like this on a bike:

Smoke on cold start up is typically valve seals.

That looks like a UK link for the Renntech rack, here's a US link:

http://www.revsperformance.com/renntec/sports_racks.htm

The SW-Motech rack for 89-00 GS500E models is still listed at SW-Motech home site and Twisted Throttle is their US distributor so it might be worth a call or e-mail to Twisted Throttle to see if it's still available or can be ordered if you want one.  I always liked the SW-Motech racks I've seen, neater looking and mount the luggage in closer and lower than many of the Givi rack applications.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

I had the SW one, too. I preferred the Renntec one because it was a little larger and mounted nicer.
Sometimes ordering from the UK is cheaper - even with shipping.
Some of the US people really mark up the prices more than the cost of shipping.
Just shop around and buy where best price.
