I've had my 92' GS for about a month now, and I've had a few problems with it.
The most glaring problem is the idle speed and properties. When it idles, every now and then, I'll hear a tick in the engine, and the RPM's will drop. If I look at the carb, when it ticks, the Carb assembly will kick back towards the rear of the bike. One possible perpitrator for this problem is the leaking hose between the Carb assembly and cylinder head. I ordered the part and hopefuly this will remedy it.
I also have a problem with the choke. When I first start the bike, and turn the choke on, I have to crank it down, and it either goes to 1.2K or 4k RPM's(No inbetween)
My other problem is the very erratic Idle speed after riding. I find myself having to adjust the carb screw when I'm at a stop sign or stop light after the bike has been ridden. I have to do this a number of times trhoughout a ride. It will either stick at 4K RPM's, or die from lack of engine speed. I am glad it's winter, and won't have to deal with this every day for riding now, but it's still frustrating :x

the "tick" is actually a backfire. you seemed to have found a source of the problem though, intake manifold leak.

the high/uneven idle is possibly from a lean fuel mixture. have you rejetted the carbs yet?

also check to see if your choke is closing all the way. I had found that my choke cable had bound up inside the sheath so the choke was staying open.

and check to see if your throttle is sticking.

Right on all counts... only addition I have is... its lean from the vacuum leak... it sucks in air from outside and not via carbs. Affects idle and low rpms a lot and causes idle to stay high.
Cool.

Problem kinda solved. As it turned out, I downloaded the Bikebandit Schematic of the carb, and I was missing the O ring on the left carb that sits between the top cover and carb body. This has fixed the poblem of Idle speeds and the backfiring. I'm still gonna replace the intake manifold though, because I noticed that plug was all fouled up on the cylinder with the broken intake pipe assembly. Thanks fellas :thumb:

Intake manifolds... they give up often enough... and usually are no big deal when they do... You might as well replace it when it dies. Funny thing... on one GS I was working on I pulled the carbs off and the manifolds split in 1/2. Turns out the manifolds were stuck to the carbs and when I pulled they were so crusty... it broke.

Did this cause constant plug fouling for you? Because on the cylinder where the manifold was cracked, I fouled 2 plugs in 3 weeks.
