Weekend Project - Garage Cleaning!

So I finally decided to get on cleaning up my mess of a garage.

A picture is worth a thousand words:

Before:

After:

Complete with the veritable broom leaning against the wall!

Socket sorting fun:

I have no idea where this came from(36mm):

What the pictures don't show is my vast collection of drive handles, ratchets,pull handles (breaker bars), extensions, knuckles, converters and other tools - some of which I didn't even know I had! :icon_lol: I think I have a total of 5 different 3/8 drive ratchets of varying vintage. Maybe I should have done this a long time ago instead of just buying more tools, eh?  :technical:

I, like many of you here I'm sure, wish I had more space to work on my bikes but as you can see...even with just one motorcycle in the garage, space is limited (the bike in the 2nd picture is almost against the other wall).

I'm still not done yet, though. I've still got to finish sorting out tools and figuring out where to put them. D'oh!

More pictures to come! Wish me luck.

Now that everything is tidy you will NOT know where anything is  :o

I love the feeling of cleaning up a workspace. Mine goes through states of messyness and cleanliness, so cleaning it is a regular project, but it's always well worth the results.

This isn't the worst it's been, but it was still pretty bad. it's just about wide open now though.

Haha, not if you don't live by yourself. Not all wives appreciate a good basement/garage workspace like some people do.

Is that a Kawasaki drill sitting there? I had one just like that. Worked great for a really long time.

Also, do you get your bike out by riding it up the stairs? LOL

Drill Brands....

Makita = Light Blue
Dewalt = Yellow
Bosch = Blue or Green
Ryobi = Blue or dark green or lime green - it's like they change with the drill and over time
Milwaukee = Red
Black & Decker = Red-ish Orange
Festool - Dark dark Blue or Black with green knob/trigger etc.
Kawasaki = Black with lime green
Hitachi = Black and darker Green

We see all these drill brands on construction sites around here. But the two most common are Makita and Hitachi

On closer look the green is more closely the Kawasaki green than the Hitachi darker green.

You're in Australia, right? I have never seen "Festool" here in the US.

Also, the Kawasaki drill is undoubtedly made by another company considering the price (cheap). Though I suppose it's possible, since Kawasaki makes a whole bunch of things other than motorcycles.

Haha, how did this entire thread turn into a discussion about drills while I was gone?? It is indeed a kawasaki drill. It worked ok but the battery eventually died. I see them when I go to buy something at pepboys, I've thought about buying a new battery, but I'd rather just put that money towards a better drill. I do the majority of my work in the basement so I usually just use a corded drill. I know batteries are supposed to be convenient, but I really prefer corded or pneumatic tools just for the simplicity.

There's a door you can't see, it was pretty much against my back as I was taking that picture. Here's a picture from the opposite direction with me standing at the bottom of the stairs. The door was elevated about 10 inches or so, I just made a ramp so I could roll things up and down. Pretty easy, although not as nice as a garage door would be, haha. On the plus side, garage doors let in a lot of cold air, and my basement is always the perfect temperature, warm in winter and cold in summer. It's great for doing projects. I used to hate doing things in my parents garage when I was younger, it was freezing in there.

Considering Kawasaki got into Motorcycles as a promotional tool for their others businesses, it makes sense they'd get into other things too.

Festool is a German company. All their tool boxes are stackable. So whether you buy a drill, reciprocating saw, ratchet gun, circular saw, whatever, the box it came in will stack on another tools box, making them easy to move around on a trolley or something. And their stuff is pretty good too - pricey but good. Start reading about them here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festool then visit their main website from the wiki page.

$100 of supplies, a saw, a hammer, and a good saturday and you could have a matching set. I've wanted nice work benches for a really long time. I'd just been using those cheap particle board shelves as work benches(you can see them in those pictures of my basement). Life is so much better with a sturdy bench that's the right height, level, not to mention the built in footrest. I planned on making some since I bought this house back in 07, but put it off for a while. I had to rebuild a motor this winter which was the final motivation I needed to finally make them. I finally bolted on my vice last weekend too. I still used it before, but forgot how convenient they could be when they're bolted to a work bench instead of sitting on the floor, held in place with your foot while you're trying to hacksaw something you have clamped in it haha. I'd like to learn how to make some nicer things out of wood. I'm fine with 2x4s, but I'd like a little table to go between my couch and the wall, plus another taller table/counter to fit between my stove and fridge with a tile top so I can just stick hot stuff right on it, but I'm not too familiar with woodwork. I've always preferred making things out of steel, it's a lot harder to break haha

I always think it's weird when companies have a lot of product crossover. Every time I see a keyboard with the yamaha symbol on it I think "what in the world is going on here?!" then I remember it's perfectly normal.
