Hey all, after lurking and learning about my 'new' bike, I finally decided to commit and join.

I bought a 1992 Gs500e with ~10500 miles and could not be happier, except the fact that it's winter in Upstate NY.
After changing out a few things to get back to stock look (couple bulbs, rear fender and taillight)
I'm kinda wondering what the stock braces were. Looking for parts is helpful but I don't really plan on buying any parts if I don't have to and will just make my own bracket if possible.

If anyone could take a few pictures of their Pre 00' bike under the seat and near the rear light I would be very greatful.

Thank you so much,
Legnd

And of course here's a picture of my bike and pictures of where I'm talking about.
P.S. I'm very excited about joining, this forum has tons of useful info that I look for daily.

Now the area I'm talking about

And more specifically here

Welcome to the forums!

I'll take some pictures and get back to you in 5 minutes.

Edit: My 1989 doesn't have a bracket, but it does have a solid grab bar mount.

Never change that awesome paint scheme. It's like the 80's bike I never had.

Nothing wrong or missing.
Those two little things are where the back bumpers of the seat rest.
Maybe at some time there was a rear rack that screwed there, I have heard there used to be an OEM rack but have never seen one.
I have seen a frame where the bracket for the rear grab handle is not joined between the two sides (as seems to be your frame). That doesn't make any difference.
Your bike looks perfectly normal.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies.

I'm more asking about if there is a bracket that connects these spots I have in red.

Mainly because my taillight moves about half an inch and I'd prefer if it didn't bounce around while riding.

Thanks,
Legnd

My 07 and my 97 do that too. Welcome to the GS500. ;)

Damn, I still think I'm gonna make a bracket. I'll show it off when I do.

Thanks!

Some movement is normal. The idea being that if every bump jolted the housing, the bulb life would be significantly shorter. Having said that, you can take a piece of foam and put it between the fairing center piece (above the light) and the light itself.

Those are holes - just that, nothing more.
Nothing goes there. Tail light will bounce a little. It is mounted with a metal tube inside a rubber grommet. Probably because if not and you bumped it, you would break it off. The grommets give some flex in case bumped or the frame torques a little when hitting a bump. Same reason all plastics have rubber grommets on them.

UPDATE:
It does look like you're missing the 2 bolts that hold in the back end of the fender and the little metal piece that is the bracket for the rubber band that holds in the tool kit.

Mine had those little round tubes in the tail light, but the rubber was so shrunken, probably from the florida heat, that the light flopped around a bit.

I just got two washers and squished the rubber, so it can still flex a bit.

Same with my guages.

I hope I dont break them in half when im dragging my pegs across the pavement

Another observation: Looks like the PO cut off the tabs on the side rails that hold the tail light. See my pix. There are tabs that hold the end of the rear fender. You don't have those tabs. Suggest you replace the two grab rails.

Not too common for the bracket for the rear passenger grab handle to have that gap. Grab handle, if tight, holds things OK.

I'm guessing the PO did a hack job on the rear then put things back before selling it. Do replace the side rails so the end of the rear fender is properly held in place. You might be missing the correct mounts for the tail light (grommets, washers, etc.) Kind of hard to tell.

Legnd

So I took new pictures, I believe all I'm missing is the bracket that holds the clip for the tools. Here are some pics of it more clearly and also me pushing the light up and down from 2 angles. I just feel uncomfortable having the light bounce that much.

Yep - you need new side rails. Without them, the end of the fender will flop a lot.
Probably the grommet for the tail light is worn or something else missing. New grommets can help or add a couple rubber faucet washers so you can tighten up things a little better.

Also noticed all your tail light wires have been spliced. The previous owner did something and cut things.

New side rails and then checking what parts are on the tail light mounts and you'll in good shape.

FYI: There is nothing on that bottom, middle point of the tail light that you pointed out before. Just the 2 long bolts hold in the tail light.

Once things replaced, you could add a little foam or something in the area if you feel the tail still flops too much.

Legnd

This maybe a silly question but are the siderails on the outside of the frame? Cause I have two rails that run outside the frame in the tail section. And the PO had an small LED brake/turn signal that I personally didn't like the look of and were quite hard to see. I prefer the stock look much more.

Are these the siderails?

Be on later, going to GF's now. Thanks so much guys for the quick replies!

I think thats what they are referring to.

I removed mine and cut them neatly off of the mount for the tail lamp.

adidasguy

Top set: right and left side rails (grab rails, whatever) from an "E" model.
Bottom is the left and right from an "F" model.
While they bolt the same, they are not compatible. Different position for tail light and rear fender mounting. "E" also has seat lock on it where the "F" seat lock is mounted into the tail plastics.
Do not confuse them when you order a set or contact a parts whore for a pair.
