1) its coming from the drain screw

2) Wish I could just find someway to plug the damn hole with like a rubber stopper or something just so it won't leak.

1) that means there is rust (from the tank) in the float bowls, and at some point the drains were opened to drain the carbs. some trash/rust/whatever got trapped in the taper between the screw and the float bowl's taper.

2) the screw does a nice job if the tapers on both the screw and bowl are clean and undamaged.

pull the bowls off the carbs and soak them (JUST THEM) in pbblaster, or a similar penetrant, with the drain screw removed.

soak also the screw.

look for trash or damage after 2 days soaking. no damage ? cool, reassemble and enjoy. do not over tighten ! do not seal the drains with anything !

the reason for the drain screws are:

dumping bad gas
dumping water
dumping the WRONG FUEL (diesel, kerosene, etc) after a fill up

76 today.. let it sit for sometime on idle.. heated up. Got on. Started to go, it backfired it was getting dark, realised my Pipes were red all the way to the actual end of the Muffler its doing this?

76F means it shouldn't need choke more than 1 minute at the most. the backfire was likely from the hot bike (idled too long) and lean condition, then a spritz of gas (you gave it throttle). perfectly expected from a lean condition bike. not good, but expected.

the pipe being red from one end to the other means it's running too lean. you may have never noticed it had you not gotten home at night.

since you have a problem with your drain screws, remove the carbs and check the jets for clogs/condition. it's definitely time for an adjustment, or maybe a rejet. condition of the jets and float bowl should be telling.

remember, the gs is air cooled, and once it responds to throttle without dying, it's time to RIDE, not idle. it needs air flow to stay cool running... if you're not moving, turn it off.

+1, I ride in that kind of weather all the time. I choke for about 30 seconds at around 3000 rpm, and then ride it easy for the first 10 minutes, I've never had an issue

The only time I've gotten those after-fires is when I start it in the cold, close to freezing.. she doesn't like that one bit

Isn't this the same GS you were going to uber-modify ? Might want to re-think that.

the reason i suggested ignition timing is if timing is to far retarded it will burn down your pipe and make it glow red .had that on a 1959 triumph that had a magneto which was retarded on one side and would backfire when kick started

the gs' ignition wheel is keyed, if it moved once, it'd move all the time, or fall off.  :thumb:

yep and also had an outboard moter that hit a log and halve sheared the key in the flywheel and threw the timing out about 5 degree ,it still ran but with no guts .

Yes, lol. Its failing more and more I take the god damn bike apart, PO lied about so many things.

And yes to everyone, there is rust coming from somewhere. I'll be cleaning my tank soon. also giving the carbs some cleaning, tuning, rejet. and hopefully Replacing the gas lines too, repairing my petcock < Just the screw holds are stripped to all hell. ^_^ oops.. I'd be fixing all this stuff properly, if I had the freakin $$ to do it. moneys tight. when is it not? I'm only 17 tho[18 in 10 days], and no help from the parents. I think I'm doing a fine job at keeping my stuff going with no job, Tho having one would be a ton easier. KEEP SEARCHING!

Get a job in a 7-11 or pick a hobby and make money off of it.

You'd be surprised what you can afford when you dont need to pay for housing, food, bills, etc..

I miss those days.

Can't work at 7/11 Hosting alcohol requires you to be 21 years or older. I'm Curious and open to suggestions on hobbys that could ring in some money, I'm good at art stuff, I can paint very well. < to say so myself. but that takes time. and more time. I can fix engines, but Around here, any place you go to. to maybe hang around to fix engines/stuff like this. You have to have a Ph.D in the freaking field, or speak Spanish.. and believe in ripping people off. Kinda stuck in a ruff. and not sure how to get out... haha by the way, those days are numbered for myself, my parents gave me a month after I turn 18 to either leave, or start paying rent. now rent is 200 dollars, but the way they threat me. Well, I don't see how paying rent is even fair, but Might have to suck up my pride and stuff it in the back because its cheaper than 1000$ a month here... Also I already pay for food/gas/internet/phone bill. for myself, the money already comes from small jobs, just not enough to pay for bike repairs. sometimes have to go without a phone because I can't afford that.

Here in GA you cannot work at convenience stores or restaurants that serve liquor unless you're 18. Grocery stores are different, but it does depend on state law.
