I'm wanting to take the chrome plate off my muffler. Before I drill the rivets and grind the
welds I want to be sure its just a smooth surface underneath. Does anyone have a picture or can tell me what's under there. Thanks

Even if it's relatively smooth, my assumption is that it's made from pretty cheap steel(especially considering how fast the headers rust), so I doubt it would look pretty. Were you just planning on clearcoating the bare steel? I know they make high temp paints, but I'm not sure if clearcoat would hold up, and bare steel would rust out.

In the past 7 years since I've been familiar with GS500s, I don't think I've ever seen one with the chrome stripped, so I still wish you the best of luck, but I'm not sure what the chances are someone around here knows much about what's under the chrome.

mine is a hunk o aluminum. It probably hasnt changed, i could be wrong.

I get the feeling that it will not be pretty under there. I recommend painting it or polishing the piece. A rattle can of exhaust paint costs 6 bucks and makes the exhaust pop. I'm thinking of doing my pipes in red.

My bike came with an aftermarket exhaust so I never had the stock one. You're probably right, I just assumed it was steel.

ttfour- im finding out new stuff i never had that was supposed to be there every day! haha I wasnt trying to rub your face in it or anything, i realise it kinda looks like that. my mistake, brother.

bohunkus - that stuff is great, and lasts quite a while. it layers well, and doesnt come out splotchy, so if you mask off the alum. with blue tape, it really makes it pop, if you dont like it, you can squirt some more on the can and you wont even be able to see the overlap. : ) the exhaust is easy to remove, and most people recommend replacing the crush rings at the head. (I didn't, and it is okay)
Paint the crap out of it!

You definitely will.
40 pilots for sure,
i was stupid and bought a dynojet jet kit, but others can make recommendations on jetting that will save you $$$ and even sell you the jets fairly cheap.

Might as well throw a k&n filter on there too, its only another 40 bucks and it does much more for power than the pipe. My bike was unridably lean before the rejet, with a K&N lunchbox and stock pipe.

edit - thanks kijona, i keep calling them 140s. doh. No wonder my idle has been so rich.

Valspar makes BBQ Grill paint:

I successfully painted the header on my KLR650 with this paint and it held up GREAT! It's all in the prep, though. I degreased with motorcycle chain degreaser (brake clean would work too) and then lightly sanded with some 500 grit sand paper to rough it up. Painted it...let it sit for 2hrs, then put it back on and rode for an hour. It baked it on. I did also warm the pipe slightly with a propane torch before I painted it but I doubt that'll make any difference.

I'm happy to say that my paintjob held up to rocks, dirt, torrential downpours...everything, and it still looked just as good as it did the day I did it when I sold it last month.

While I agree that sounds BAD ASS...

Never. Ever. Ever. Ever...
EVER
Run your bike without the exhaust header like that.

Okay. :) Enjoy!

adidasguy

Leave exhaust on the bike.
By hand, remove crap with a scratchy pad.
Apply Rutland's Stove Polish (in the tube)
Wait, then buff to desired sheen.
makes them look brand new.
Touch up as necessary.

Its cheap, easy and you don't have to remove the pipes from the bike.

The stuff is a waxy polish for cast iron stoves and grills. So it can take the heat and looks great. That's all I use now.

bohunkus

Where do you get the stove polish?

Where do you get the stove polish?

The stove store...where else?

Probably Home Depot or Lowes or possibly Walmart.

bohunkus

Awesome. That's what I will do. Thanks for the help.
