Is Your Sprocket Worn Out?

I remember that a few months ago someone wondered what a worn out sprocket looked like.
In cleaning parts from all my stash, I found bad sprockets. Here to help you identify a bad sprocket are some pictures.

On way to aid in identifying a bad sprocket is:
1. LOOK at it.
2. Flip it over
3. LOOK again.
4. Do the points appear to be going in the opposite direction? If so - it is worn. How bad? Your call.

The same applies to the front and rear sprockets. Because the rear has more teeth, it will not wear down as fast as the front sprocket.

Hope these help.

Those things we refer to as "shark fins". Notice the angle and each side of a point is not the same. They curve in one direction.

The pitting is irrelevant. That's just from a little surface rust. The curve of the teeth is why it is so bad.

Sticky! maybe on the wiki page, or maybe we should add a maintenance sticky subforum. there are a lot of stickies in the gen subforum.

No need to sticky. Noone reads them anyway. Just save the url and when someone asks about sprockets BAM there you go.  :thumb: :thumb:

Haha, that's very true. I've been on this forum for about 8 years, and I haven't looked at a single sticky

When I first joined, I didn't read the stickies, but man did I read the hell out of the wiki.

Actually I hate those stupid stickys.  They are always in the way of the "good stuff"... There's almost a whole page of stickys....Can't they go into their own place and not be on top of the "regular" posts?

none of them look that bad. a little bit of wear, but no need replacing them unless it's making snatchy noises on decelleration.

the 'bad' ones i've seen look like little hocky pucks with pedals instead of teeth.

Is that a sprocket?
Maybe I was too harsh in my judgement of front sprockets. Maybe I'm too much of a prefectionist  :cookoo:

I don't think it is. I think it's a back massage tool.

How it was even ridden like that is BEYOND me. LOL

It wasn't. When the sprocket gets to that point the chain just slides around the damn thing. If you're lucky, it doesn't jump off and take your foot.

At that point, no problem...ditch the chain, just go to belt drive?!

This. Pay attention to your sprocket condition whenever you lube your chain. If it hops, it's either A. taking out your clutch rod, or B. turning into a 487cc chainsaw and taking everything in it's path.

To dredge up an old, but perfectly on point thread, or to create an entirely new thread... THAT is the question.

I'm thinking this sprocket could use a replacement soon, right?

k.rollin

I'd replace it; those teeth look mighty short. Might be a perspective issue though.

ye gods!!... those pics by polar, kij and burn ... i mean ... like....  :cookoo:  ;)

i thought mine was bad.. and it not even like adidas front sprocket pics..

but.. i have a solution!! .. the amazing power of Dremel!! .. yes thats right viewers!, you can grind.. you can smooth.. you can easily remove unwanted material! ..  ;) .. burn could just smooth down the end of the teeth all nice and nearly square ... kij and polar just have to dig into the base of the dishes and holler em out agin! and adidas just put some spots of weld on the teeth and shape em up! :flipoff:  .. brand new second hand sprockets! .. so ring now! our operators are waiting for your call!!... want more!!??!? .. order your dremel kit in the next 5 mins and we'll throw in some second hand steak knives that have been reshaped and re-sharpened with the very dremel you buy!!... you'll wonder what sort of gorilla did the work they are so dodgy!!.. 1800-riptOFF ... ring now... our operators are still waiting for your call.... or any call.... anything yet?... no...

bahahahahah... i'm often good at solutions such as this   :icon_lol:

I'd be hard to NOT have the questions answered by a sticki or wiki when they take up 3/4 of the page. =)
