I have a 2001 GS500E with a clean title for sale. The bike needs some work. The bike will start, but needs the carbs cleaned/rebuilt, and the floats adjusted as one leaks fuel. The side cover needs a new gasket which is included in the sale, the gas tank needs to be coated, and the bike will need tires prior to inspection. Currently the gas tank is off the bike, but the bike can be started off a remote tank for an interested buyer. I bought the bike a year ago with the intention of fixing it up and riding it locally, but I just don't have the time to finish it.

I am working on getting pics. Right now the bike has parts in 2 different houses while I get some parts, adjust the floats and derust the inside of the tank. I will probably have it running and synch the carbs this weekend. I will take pics for everyone. Then it is on to tires. I was going to flip it, but now I do believe I will keep the little bugger. Suspension and paint in the near future.

Derusting the tank can be done real easy. Get muriatic acid from the hardware store 1qt. Put a half quart of water in the tank then pour in the acid. Shake it up ,open the cap every 30 sec or so and keep your face away from the opening and do it outside (not even in the garage but outside) the fumes that come out are vicious. When your done rinse it out (cold water) dry it and spray the inside with wd-40 to keep it from flash rusting til you start using it. The tanks i've done took about 3 minutes to be totally rust free.

Don't know how much of an issue money is, but I'd like to say that I recently tried the DIY tank derusting. The flash rust that happens immediately after was too much for me. I ended up paying 35 bucks to a local radiator shop (after trying for about a week to de-rust on my own). Beautiful work. Should've done it that way to begin with.

DISCLAIMER: I did not use the muriatic acid method, but rather the vinegar one. I understand it was my mistake for not taking precautions with the drying and WD-40. Still, IMO, the 35 bucks were truly worth it...

If a radiator shop will take it on yes very good, though you still have to coat it afterward. I have not found any in my area that would take up a tank. However did it damage the paint on it ?

Buddah, you're asking me? No, they didn't damage the paint, but it wouldn't have mattered, as I was sandblasting it and then powdercoating it anyway.
