i went down to my bike shop and bought one for 16 dollars, so cheap as. put it on and went for a ride, still deciding whether i like it or not. it just seems to rev through a lot quicker, and as for top end its almost unchanged, maybe about 300 rpm. and my chain is as tight as it can go, it was already pretty stretched, so i think i might just buy a 109 link and new back sprocket so its correct.

What brand of sprocket was it? Also, it's just your chain. Your chain is all stretched out - it should have been only a notch back from the center if your chain was in good shape.

I would either a) put the 16t back on until you have a new chain and rear sprocket or b) not ride the bike until you replace the chain and sprocket. Riding with the new sprocket and old chain will put unnecessary wear on the sprocket and by the time you replace that chain it'll likely be prematurely worn out.

ok thanks for the advice, i think ill put the old sprocket back on and then replace it all next week. do you think putting a 109 link would be better with the 15t so that i get a longer life out of it??

Chains come in 2 link increments unless you find one of those offset links they used years ago.  Beside, a 15T front will move the axle back only about 5/32" further than where a new 110 link chain with stock 39T rear would be with a stock 16T front.  Plenty of slot left

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

oh btw it was a jt sprocket kijona..
and another quick question, the back axle requires a 23 mm socket to fit it right??

22mm but if you don't have one you can get away with a 7/8" lug wrench from a car. The difference is only .2mm so it should be a close fit. I had to use a 4-way lug wrench on my bike one day because I couldn't find my 22mm socket.

JT sprockets are very decent for the money.

My advice is to stick with the 110 link. 15/39 setup will be perfectly fine. With stock sprocket sizes and chain length the adjusters should be somewhere in the middle - a 15t would only increase it by a small amount - almost unnoticeable.

As far as a new chain is concerned, I STRONGLY recommend this one: http://www.bikebandit.com/bikemaster-520-o-ring-motorcycle-chain?b=28939 it really is, for the money, a very high quality chain. It's not an x-ring but so long as you take care of it it'll last a really long time. I have one on my 07 and it feels very hefty. Thing you gotta realize is the GS500 doesn't have a ton of power, so the difference between a middle-of-the-road chain and a high-end chain is negligible. Also, the one I linked you absolutely comes with a clip-type masterlink. Some chains do, some chains don't, and there's no way to know unless someone mentions it in a review or you can put your hands on it before purchasing.

ok thanks very much for your advice (Y)
