GSXF600 build ideas

Just so I dont threadjack my homeboys thread, here it goes...

Ok, to start, theres a guy on gstwin who was successfully showhorned a CBRf3 engien into his gs500, and its pretty badass, only inherent problems I see is frame twist, and a different rake, making a stabilizer bar mandatory in my mind.

Now, I been kicking around the idea of something similar. My bike is comfortable, and it handles great, but the power is severely lacking. On the freeway, it just plain sucks.

Now, My original thought of mind was to do something similar, but thinking of it, it may be easier to do the OPPOSITE

The main mods/only mods that are worthwhile, are the gsxf600 rear shock and rim (better suspension and wider tire) and the gsxf600 front forks for better adjust ability and dual piston brakes (will fit in the triple with a spacer).

Why are us gstwinners doing this, leaving us with a nimble bike with absolutely no power modifications, when we can be doing the opposite, getting a cheap old gsxf600, and making IT more nimble?

It wouldn't be terribly difficult to clean up the GSXF frame, lop off the subframe, and put on the gs500 sub frame. The tanks of both bikes appear similar, and I bet with a little finagling, I could get the gs500 tank to work.


In the end, I would basically have a gs500 with an indestructable suzuki i4 water/oil cooled engine, the correct rake, and it would be sexy (I like naked bikes)

Now, from the gurus here (I don't mind some wisecracks), is this a plausible idea, or is there some inherent fallacy that I'm missing?

The biggest issue I always see is getting the the sprockets to line up when swapping a larger engine into a narrow GS500 frame.  If I'm following what you're saying you want to put the GS500 subframe (tail section) on a Katana frame?  Not trying to discourage you but just not sure what that would accomplish.

I've owned a few Kat 600's and they are great bikes.  While heavier than a GS they are still fairly nimble.  They also have a nice forum at www.katriders.com.  I'd say just leave it as a Katana and enjoy it if you get one.  Or if you enjoy projects more, go for your concept   :thumb:  And by the way, the Katana is air/oil cooled, no water involved.

I don't think you can fanaggle the gs tank on the kat...... but i have(might still have) a perfect kat tank

I wouldnt be swapping the kat engine into the gs frame...

Id be buying a katana, gutting it down to its frame and bits, grind off all unnecessary mounts, and paint it so the frame looks simular to the gs one, than id chop off the tail end, put on the gs tail end.

Why put katana parts on a gs when I can put gs parts on a katana?

Dropping all the dead weight on the kat w. the huge rear subframe, misc mounts, and probably loads of other crap I dont need, I don't see it being much heavier than a gs.

I love the looks of the GS, and I love how nimble it is, and the difference between the kat and the gs, to me, seems to be less than 2 inches longer wheelbase, better engine, better suspension.

Just the frame is heavier, and I bet the stock exhaust is heavier.

I guess it's just different points of view but I still see that as a Katana with a different tail, not a GS with a Katana engine.  Keep in mind that the Katana is a wider bike, the GS tank and tail may look strange on a bulbous front frame.  And a good portion of the weight difference between the bikes is the I4 engine.  If this is something you really want to do though I have a GS frame you can have on my scrap metal heap if you are in the Maryland area   :thumb:

I think it's great.  Anything that inspires you to try something different is worth a shot.  You might not even finish.  You might fail but you learned.  I completely bombed my first bike.  My old Sabre, I took it all apart and put it all back together and totally messed it up.  I did learn a bit on it though (it was submerged during a tropical storm).  I ENJOY working on it and trying to make it run, making it the way my mind sees it or simply putting the pieces of the puzzle together.
Xune, you already have a good looking GS, so why not try something new on a some donor bikes?

the GS500 engine creates 35hp at the wheel. The ex500 engine creates 55hp with 38ft/lb tq at the wheel.
Ex500 is water cooled and creates more power. my current project is a 540cc ex500 engine using zx11 pistons.

You can try my ninja 500 after i do the valve adjustment on it. I hate how the gs feels in comparison to the ex500

I will find a mule bike when we move into the new house and I have the garage, until than its hypothesizing.

I'm actually seriously debating finding a ex500 or 650r thats been wrecked and putting a twin into the gs
