I think I decided on an ex500 engine for my first motorcycle build, don't want to get in over my head with an I4, electronics, etc. Im No CBRFX87 or Buddha, ya know!

Posted this idea over on ex-500.com

QuoteHey guys, I'm pretty aactive on gstwins as the same username, and origionally I was torn between the gs and the ex500...

Now, I've been looking into more reliable power, and being I've maxed out my mods I can currently do for my bike and still have it reliable (its my daily driver)...I've come to the engine swap stage.

First off, im torn between an ex500 and a 650r, their both twins, should fit with minimal work.

Ex500 would be easier, being most electronics and chain type are the same.

The big question is:

The carbs in my gs are three circuit, I have a pilot, mid-main, and a main, which makes for better tune-ability than the old twin circuit carbs on older gs's.

From what I read, ex500's also have twin circuit carbs.

This may be uncharted territory, but should I find a wrecked or untitalable ex500 and make the engine work in my chassis, what problems would I have running my carbs?

From what I read, stock jetting for your carbs is around 130.
Our stock jets are Pilot 17.5, Mid Main 60, Main 130

Right now im running 22.5, 65, 145 with a k&n filter and r6r exhaust with no dead spots, and spark heat seems perfect.

Now, if I stuck my stock jets back in my carbs, and plopped my carbs on the ex500 engine, theoretically it should run the same as your carbs, except I have a mid-main so I'll have a flatter powerband.

FOG, if your out there, or anyone that has ever charted into this Territory, please, chime in.

And, if you wish to jump on gstwins.com, your more than welcome!!!

I was just wondering if anyone had attempted that before.....

Good luck!

I'm not against it, I just wonder why you would do it.

Water cooled, 20cc's more displacement, 12hp more at the wheel, easy to work on.

Plus, I can find a donor bike for 200 bucks thats been in a front end collision for almost nothing.

And, no frame mods necessary.

IDK, cause I can?

"donor bike for 200 bucks" <<- this

I looked at the ex500 specs, trying to see why you'd go that route xune, but you answered it with the donor bike part.  I'm a big fan of 'use what you got.'

Can't wait to see your ingenuity put this together if you decide to do it!  :woohoo:

IDK, 650r's are getting pretty cheap now, and a lot of people are wrecking them. May wind up being a 650r when the time comes.

It'll still fit just as easily though.

Wow, the kawa 650r is a good looking beast.  what surprises me, however, is that according to cycle-ergo.com, it's even more of an upright position, than our gs500. Feels like a standard, looks like a sportbike. wiiierd :)

(the 650r is even more upright than the sv650 NON-s model)

Its true, sat one a showroom new one, its as upright as a harley. Only the floor pegs are below you, not forward mount.

I've been on a few H-D bikes that had mid-controls. When I end up with a Sportster project, that's how I'll set it up.

xunedeinx

That'd be a project, shove an 883 into a gs frame, and turbo the low compression Buddha Loves You all to hell.

Big Rich

Forget the 883 - go with a Blast motor.

Either way, can't wait to see what you do!
83 GR650 (riding / rolling project)

It's opener there in the wide open air...

When it comes time, im going to scour craigslist and auctions for some broken non-fixable bike, and whatever it is as long as its cheap, its going in my fframe.

Dont care if its an r6, 883, buell, BMW, or even a friggin goldwing. Its happening.

So are you building something or are these all projections? Isn't this the build forum?  :dunno_black:

Seamax, I love your bike!  Do you have anywhere where you have more pics of it?

Thanks!

Edit:  Nevermind, found a bunch via google!  Did you have a build thread?  I'd love to see the work you put into it.

The great Seamax,...living inspiration.  THE best looking GS that I've ever seen.  My humble two cents.

would a 500 2 stroke be too radical for street use?

Both = fail

650r = owns a gs and ex simultaneously, while eating their lunch annnnnnd smacking their moms around

Not at all. I think it would be great :thumb: :thumb:

crzydood17

go with the new 650R I2 those things make 20 more HP than a GS and 10ish more than a EX and gobs more torque, Would seriously put the little GS500 in a new class, it could be called a GSX650R! (GS model 4 valve 650cc R because thats the letter of the bike it came from)

Another interesting swap could be a GSX650F engine swap...
2004 GS500F (Sold)
2001 GS500 (being torn apart)
1992 GS500E (being rebuilt)
