Love for the GS forum

I think this forum is one of the reasons I keep my GS's even though I don't ride them much anymore.  I belong to a few motorcycle forums (katriders.com, svriders.com, advrider.com, stuntlife...) and while they all provide a bit of entertainment, none are as helpful as this forum when you need a question answered.  I have a mystery hose after rebuilding the carbs on my Shadow 500 winter project so I joined hondashadow.net last week.  Posted my question and some reference photos and I haven't had any helpful responses.  I would have had a question like that answered in a day around here.  Kudos to you gstwin forum members

agreed. the gs was technicaly heather's, not mine but I've still been here since 2003. sold the bike a year ago and never stopped coming here.

Seriously, I agree with you. This site is great - it was really good back when I first joined in 2009, and it's still good now - though it seems like a lot of people have left.

The bike runs with it detached but it obviously has to serve some purpose.  It attaches just above the float bowl on the left carb.  The hose is too short to just be a drain hose but the only thing I could see it running to is the tank over flow (which may be correct) but I've never had a bike that ran a tank over flow to a carburetor.  My other 2 Honda 500's don't have this hose so I'm assuming it has something to do with the California emissions on this bike.  Anybody here worked on a bike where the tank overflow ran to the carbs??  Thanks

Wouldn't that flood the carbies when it did overflow though?

The drain comes straight off of the tank. It drains water around the gas cap. open the gas cap and look for a hole in the recessed area around the fuel hole - left of it I believe.

CA tanks have extra emissions hose. It comes off the bottom of the tank and makes a right angle bend. That's how you tell the difference in the extra hoses. That one can be blocked off. I forget where it goes without opening the books.

This tank doesn't have a drain like the GS, the fuel cap seals solid to the tank and if you tip the tank forward gas from inside the tank comes out the only drain on the bottom.  I think it may be part of the primitive CA emissions system to vent vapors to the carb but my repair manual doesn't have any info on it.  I was hoping somone on the Shadow forum could confirm that for me but....

my GS carbs had one hose that was about 5 inches long and just stuck out to no where. I think it's a vent hose, but really if it's a vent I was never sure why it needed a nose. I left it on because it was there, and I had it, but I never would've been concerned if I lost it.
