R&G frame sliders install question

Dresnewtoy

Just got my R&G frame sliders today.

The question to anyone who's installed this:
According to the instructions, you put the fat spacer on the LHS. When i put it on, it doesn't leave much thread for the stainless steel extension as pictured below. I'm tempted to go to Lowes and use a couple regular washers instead of this thick spacer so i have more thread to hold the extension securely.

Did you guys go by the instructions, or came up with another solution?

Peace
Dre

Did you change the engine bolt to the one they provided?
Did you over tighten things on the right side?
With neither side on, how much thread is there on each side with the spacers on?

Dresnewtoy

Addy to the rescue!

I took out the OEM bolt and put the new one in.
When i put the new bolt in and balance it, i have 3/4" of thread on each side.
When i put the smaller spacer on the RHS i'm left with 1/2" of thread on the RHS.
When i put the larger spacer on the LHS i'm left with only 5/16" of thread on the LHS.

The small spacer is 1/8" thick
The larger spacer is 5/16" thick.

Does it make sense? (I haven't tightened anything yet, want some consultation before i finish install)

I believe the spacers are a little different because the engine sticks out slightly more on the left than the right. Hence, slider farther out for better protection.

Oh - don't forget thread lock.  :whisper:

Oh, the spacers are not mandatory. I may have put none on the right and the small one on the left. I forget right now as Junior is at home. I'm on Suzi today. Her sliders are for the fairing so the spacers and stuff is different - must be same distance on both sides.

Dresnewtoy

Mine is the F model.

The left side sticks out 3.5" (clutch side). The right side sticks out 4" (generator side).

I think you're right though, the spacers must not be mandatory. If i follow the instructions, i would end up putting the smaller spacer on the side that juts out more (which really needs the larger spacer).

I just read the instructions again and it says 'the way the kit is packed does not necessarily represent the way of mounting to the bike'............In other words the instructions are rubbish!!

Think i'll install without the washers, see if it juts out past the fairing and engine, then add a spacer or couple of washers if necessary.

OK. Faired model.
Looked at Suzi. She's behaving herself outside the office.
Thin on right
Thick on Left.
Have you used the pointer thingy and marked the holes to cut in the fairing?

With the fairing, the spacers are required or the bobbins will hit the fairing.

Instructions are not rubbish. "The way packed..." means how the parts were stuffed into the package. Spacers were probably in a baggy. I remember following the instructions and Suzi's sliders went on perfectly.

Dresnewtoy

Got ya. I take your word for it that the instructions are good. I will give Twisted Throttle a holler then, maybe i got the wrong stuff.

Thanks Addy, really appreciate your help.

I'll post the results when i finish the install.

adidasguy

Was there a pointer thingy you put on to mark the location for the holes?
If not, then you got the un-faired model.
The instructions say to put in the bolt. Put the pointer on and a dab of paint. Hold the fairing back in place. Take off and note the location of the dab of paint..... (I can go on)
If all that is not there, you got the un-faired model. Its lengths are a little different. I have one of each - Suzi faired and Junior un-faired. Trey has SW Motech engine bars.

Dresnewtoy

Didn't get a pointer thingy, but i improvised and got the holes right on.

I did a dry run, the fairings and bobbins fit without the need for the spacers.

I don't have any thread lock, i'll pick that up in the a.m. Think i'll also add two locking washers for added security where the spacers would fit.

adidasguy

Seems you were sent the non-faired package.
If you got it to work, good job.
PICTURES!

Dresnewtoy

Might be. My Blackberry takes crappy photos.

Dizzledan

Looks good, like a longboard wheel. How much did you pay for the set?

adidasguy

Suzi has them. I think they look cool and have saved her when she fell over.
Twisted Throttle has them for about $90 or so. Ordering direct from R&G in the UK is cheaper but you have more postage. You save if you order everything you need from them at one time - like bar ends and a shark fin.

Dresnewtoy

When i was looking

R&G racing UK had them for a little over 66 pounds shipped (which works out to a little over $100) Twisted Throttle has them for $96+ shipped, but they will match a lower price.
Found them for $86+ on another price which Twisted throttle matched, then charged me shipping.

Ended up costing me $93 shipped. (i only saved $3 - but it's still worth the effort).

adidasguy

Came out to $99 shipped by today's conversion rate. Buy bar end and other stuff and you can spread the shipping over all items and save money.
